The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

It was a while before Ian realised what was going on. At the time he'd wondered what those interviews had been for and now he knew. Well, he wasn't going to be caught out like that again.

It hadn't just been his words that had been twisted and taken out of context - he could tell that even before people started complaining. But there was something important he felt he had to clear up.

He stood up on a chair and said in a voice loud enough to carry to anyone who listened, "I do not find Wesker attractive."

"I might be offended," came a voice like silk from nearby.

Wesker a table behind him, glass of wine resting by one hand, the other arm propped up on the elbow, thumb idly picking at the nails of its fellows.

"If I honestly cared."

Ian looked round and wished he didn't feel so intimidated by someone who was sitting down. Although Ian did get off the chair because standing on it probably did make him look a bit silly.

"I didn't think you would. After all, we're both men." If Wesker had been a woman he'd have had a chat in private, not announced it in public.

"And yet, one of us is still making a spectacle of themselves..."

The propped hand opened, palm up, gesturing lightly to the chair Ian had just clambered down from. A dark thread of amusement woven into Wesker's cool, smooth speech as his head tipped.

"Did you truly expect anything less?"

He shrugged. Given that he'd been on television in the arena, which would be considered a spectacle, he wasn't worried about making a spectacle of himself now. Especially when he wasn't the only one.

"It's not unknown for men to be interested in other men," he said slowly, unsure what Wesker's reaction to that was likely to be.

"Hardly, but I'm not the one troubled enough by it to shout denials at anyone who will listen," he replied, sounding almost bored. "Why waste precious time and energy on what I already know to be untrue? Propaganda is just that, and hardly worth the attention."

"Very probably." And by shouting it out perhaps he'd just drawn attention to it, but if it made a few less people wonder if there was some truth in it, he wouldn't regret his actions. "I wanted to set the record straight."

"Perhaps you should try the roof," he suggested, patronizingly dry. "It won't make any more difference, I'm sure, but the acoustics are undoubtedly better."

Whether Ian had something to hide or not, Wesker didn't care. He simply found the idiocy of trying to deal with something one didn't like by drawing more attention to it astounding.

He was of the mind that problems were to be dealt with quietly, swiftly, and brutally.

So he didn't want to hear it. Ian could hardly blame him - had he been in Wesker's position he might have gone and hid until it had all been forgotten. Although from what he knew of Wesker, he probably wasn't the type.

"If it won't make any difference, I think I'll limit my shouting to the room. But at least we know where each other stands."

She looked at her friend-- was he her friend? Cindy was a little worried about having friends in this place. But out of the people who'd she interacted with so far, she had really enjoyed talking to Ian. He was different, he was interesting, and while the interview had taken it out of context, he was cute.

Especially when he stood up on his chair and let everyone know that. She was standing a little bit away, but she came over after his statement. "Well that's a relief. I'd hate to have to hit you on the head so we could have the doctors make sure you're not starting to get delusional."

He smiled and relaxed a little at that, getting down off the chair. "You have permission to hit me on the head if I ever show any signs of delusion. Of course I can't tell you what they'll be because I'll be too delusional to tell you I'm delusional." He grinned.

Cindy laughed. "I guess it'll have to be a judgement call on my part, then. I think I'm pretty good at judging crazy, but being here for awhile might make anyone go crazy, too." She took a sip from the champagne glass she was holding.

"It's nice to see you again. Now, tell me, what were you saying that they totally took out of context and made you look awful with?"

"They were trying to insinuate that I liked men," he said with a sigh. He wasn't sure he wanted to repeat the whole thing if she hadn't heard it.

Oh, no, she'd heard it. She just wanted to hear him say it. "So you don't like men, is what I guess you're going with? I'm sure all of your female fans are going to be so happy to hear that," She grinned. "Besides, it's not like you actually came out and said you like guys. I think you're in the clear."

He relaxed a little. "I'm glad to hear that." If she believed that he didn't like men, he was sure others did too. "I don't have any female fans," he said confidently, but then added, "Do I?"

Cindy laughed. "You don't think you have female fans?" This guy was definitely different, to say the least. "Okay, trust me when I say this: you have female fans. In fact, you might get more female fans because of this whole debacle!"

She smirked. "You have female fans. Hope you're ready for that."

"Not really." He was a little confused and wary about the idea of having female fans. "Why would I have female fans?"

"Really? He could be if you know he wasn't really creepy." Sarcasm? Yep, she's still livid about them twisting her words.

"I never thought about that." He smiled as he decided to play it straight, as it were, and got down off the chair. "Now I come to think of it he is quite handsome. For a man."

"And creepy!" She piped up again. "I mean really who wears sunglasses inside? That's so '80's."

"It is?" He looked confused about that. "What happened in the 80s to make them do that?"

"Well from what I remember from movies... only the bad guys wore glasses like that inside. Usually it was to help obscure their faces." Really is this guy for real? He's older than she is he should have lived through that era.

He frowned, trying to remember if he'd seen any like that, but then he hadn't seen any in the 80s. "That wouldn't work very well. Surely a balaclava would be a better idea."

"Yeah if you're just a hoodlum. Drug dealers try to look cool, and pimps abuse the use of fake fur Even past Y2K."

Ian wasn't quite sure they were speaking the same language. "If you say so. What's Y2K?"
