The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

"You're welcome." She let go of his hand, laughing behind one of her own. He really was a cutie.

"You are one of the good guys," She agreed with a small nod. "I think everyone can see that. Probably why some people might poke a little fun at you. In a general way. It's one of those... you see someone good, you can't help but want to needle at them a little bit. Too good to be true, you know?"

"I suppose so," he said, but he didn't sound very sure. "Being good just means not doing anything morally wrong. It's not too hard."

"True." Cindy wasn't too sure on that, though. She considered herself to be one of the good guys, but she'd done some pretty morally wrong things. She considered the guy she worked with to be a good guy (despite his big and bad tendencies). She considered a lot of people to be good, even when they did some really awful things.

Maybe everyone's definition of good was different? "But it's more..." She paused, snapping her fingers, trying to find the right words. "You seem... non-corruptible. You know? You're that kind of good."

He shook his head. "Everyone has their price." He didn't elaborate on what his price might be. Not least because he wasn't sure what he might be, but he could imagine that in a place like this he might end up finding out. "Mine's just higher than most."

"Good to know you won't give it up for a buck," Cindy smirked, tossing her hair over one shoulder. "I'm still figuring out what my price would be. I'd like to think mine would be pretty high, but... maybe it's good that I'm not as noticeable as others, right now."

They hadn't had their chance to dig their claws into her. Not yet, anyway.

He grinned. "I hope we never have to find out," he said, expression more serious. "But I wouldn't put it past the Capitol to push us, though." Especially given what they'd just done. He looked around them a little nervously, but maybe now that they'd discussed it the Capitol would't do anything like that because they'd have lost the element of surprise.

Ah, yes. They were starting to push, weren't they? Cindy grew serious, looking down while she twisted a lock of hair. This was her sign that she was nervous about something, and she didn't always know she was doing it.

"I'm sure it'll come up. I mean, what else are they going to do here, leave us all in peace? We're going to be fucked come arena time." She swallowed. "You've been in an arena, yet? I forget."

Ian blinked at language he never expected to hear from her. "I have," he said hesitantly, then pulled himself together. "I doubt they're ever going to leave us in peace for long. There wouldn't be any fun in that."

She did love blowing people's expectations out of the water. Princesses weren't supposed to curse, but she didn't consider herself a princess. Not anymore.

"No, there wouldn't be any fun," Cindy sighed, giving a little grimace. "You know what's tough? We all have to watch what we say and do here, for obvious reasons." She gestured to the TV. Obvious reasons being they took whatever they saw and put it on TV, so they had to have more of it.

"But we're going to have to watch ourselves in the arena, too. It's not enough to try and survive, you have to do it in a way that the audience will like."

He glanced over to the TV. He'd got the message about being careful what he said and did. But when they were always watching and could take anything out of context it was hard to be that careful.

"I don't see why," he said bitterly. "I didn't ask to come here and be put in an arena. Why should I be entertaining? What's the worst they can do?"

"Apparently not kill us!" Cindy laughed, rolling her eyes. She was careful when it mattered, and nothing she needed to be careful of at home truly mattered here.

"Torture us, maybe, inside the arena and out? Torture our friends, any family we might have?"

"There is that." He didn't sound quite so confident any more. Torturing him was one thing and it seemed like they were pretty much doing that anyway, if not specifically aimed at him. But bringing in his friends or family and torturing them was another thing altogether. "I hope it doesn't come to that."

"Frankly, I'd love for them to bring some of my friends from home, here," Cindy said, honestly and bluntly. "They'd tear their asses apart. They wouldn't need more then a day here to mess it up."

God, Bidgby would be just perfect here. He'd blow down the whole fucking Capitol with a huff and a puff. Cindy's friends were not the normal kinds of friends, clearly.

Ian laughed, although he was beginning to think there was more to Cindy than she appeared - based on her swearing and description of her friends at least. "I suppose some of my friends would be similar, given the opportunity." It was not having the opportunity that was the problem.

She seemed like a shallow person at first, which was exactly what she wanted to look like. But there was a lot more to her, and if anyone took the time to get to know her, well. They'd start to see that. Problem was, she'd have to spend a lot more time with people then she usually did.

The Capitol seemed to be good at making that happen. "One day. The Capitol won't know what hit them when some of our friends show up here," She laughed. "Until then, I guess I get to make trouble all on my own. And by trouble, I mean sit back and watch everyone do their thing."

He gave a wry smile at that. "They have got things all sewn up here to make it as hard to rebel as possible." Monitoring everything they did had a lot to do with that. "One person on their own isn't enough to change anything."

"And no one really joins a group, here." Cindy rolled her eyes. "I bet we couldn't even organize a girl scout troop for this place, seriously, it's no wonder they don't have things like organized sports. All they do is watch the arenas."

That was one thing she didn't understand. Sure, it was entertainment. But what about anything else? No football or anything here, and at least the teams stayed alive for season after season. How were you supposed to have favorites when all but one ended up dying, never to be seen again? Maybe that's why these games were so popular, now. Everyone came back, again, and again, and again.

He shrugged. "Maybe groups like the scouts and sports clubs are outlawed because they would give people a chance to rebel." It might explain a lot. And if they'd been outlawed a long time ago people would think that not having them is normal.

"Of course with all of the tributes there's a natural tendency to bond over the situation we've found ourselves in." When they weren't trying to kill each other, that was.

"Probably." Cindy had to agree with that. Back home, joining a group like that meant you were doing something the government approved of. Here, who knows? Girl Scout cookies could lead to overthrowing the government.

"For us, yeah. But I'd love to know how past tributes dealt with this. There's not much room for friendship when you know all but one is going to die, you know?" She shook her head. "Here we get to come back and do it all over again. But they're just... well. Dead."

He nodded. "I don't think I'd want to get to know someone I might have to kill." Killing them and then getting to know them was a bit strange, though.

"Befriending someone who's going to die might help them, although it wouldn't be quite the same." They wouldn't need comforting in quite the same way.

"That's what we're doing here. But what's the phrase, politics makes strange bedfellows? Maybe that's how it goes for this place, too. Making friends that you'll have to kill causes you to become strange bedfellows with them." Cindy took a moment to let the phrasing sink in, before she grinned.

"How about you, good sir? What kind of bed fellows do you think you'll be having?" She gave him a wink.

He blushed, feeling that she was using a different sense of the word in her question to how she had previously. "None, I expect." He coughed and tried to look and sound as if he wasn't at all embarrassed by her question. "I wouldn't want the capitol to use any bedfellows against me, strange or otherwise."

Yup. She was definitely using it in a different way then before. "That's probably a good idea. Unless you're one of those guys that gets attach to everyone they meet."

She shrugged. "Otherwise, you're going to be in for a big surprise, here."

He shook his head. "I'm not." Not in any sense of the word attach. "Friends are one thing, but bedfellows are reserved for when you're married." Which wasn't going to be happening here.

Cindy had to laugh. "You really are pretty straight-laced. And a good guy, but I think we already established that before."

Waiting to be married before having some bedfellows. Something she used to believe in, but being married to Prince Charming had jaded her to that really quickly. Cheating bastard.
