The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

He frowned, trying to remember if he'd seen any like that, but then he hadn't seen any in the 80s. "That wouldn't work very well. Surely a balaclava would be a better idea."

"Yeah if you're just a hoodlum. Drug dealers try to look cool, and pimps abuse the use of fake fur Even past Y2K."

Ian wasn't quite sure they were speaking the same language. "If you say so. What's Y2K?"

"Year two thousand. K for the thousand Y for year." And she says it like 'duh completely obvious'!

"That makes sense." It wouldn't have been his first thought, though if he'd had to guess.

Since he'd already shown his ignorance he might as well prove it. "Are years not known by numbers in the 21st century?"

"Yes, it's just... Well they tend to cut things down because a lot of people communicate with chat programs or texting. Because talking's really too slow." She's proud of her 40 messages in 40 seconds okay!

"Right," he said, not sounding convinced because he couldn't understand what she was saying at all. "Y2K is only one character less than 2000."

"Still shorter." She grinned a little. "I think part of that one came with the virus that the text books say was supposed to cause serious problems and stop a lot of computers around then. Dad was worried about it so I know it was a government problem. The tech community had a laugh about that one though when the next day everything was still running smoothly."

He frowned, trying to work out what a virus had to do with computers and why a computer problem would be a serious thing. "Presumably they just turned the computers off and turned them back on again the next day."

"You really don't know what a computer virus is do you? Besides no one turns off their computers... it's like a lifeline to constant information."

He shook his head. "I know what a virus is, but I don't see what it has to do with computers." They weren't organic, so there was no way they could get a virus.

"Well a computer virus is a program that runs like a living virus, it attacks the 'life' of the computer, it's data. They can cause a lot of damage if they get into government computers, or even hospitals..." She dropped the attitude since this was something she was actually interested in.

"The Y2K one was supposed to bring the world to a complete stand still and it was something supposedly written in to all computers since the first one."

He nodded, although he only vaguely understood her explanation. "So someone wrote it in there on purpose?" That sounded like a long time to wait for a plan to come to fruition.

"Maybe it was an inside joke that they didn't think would really amount to anything, just, when nothing happened a lot of people were pissed and most had a good laugh."

[splendid_roman]

"Maybe." Not really understanding the situation made it hard to guess really. "If the computer operators got to laugh over it, I suppose it doesn't matter what the original intention was."

"Dad freaked, ran so many scans on his system it bogged down, and he was upset that he couldn't run them on my gaming system to make sure it was safe, though I didn't go on line with that."

Ian hesitated a moment, not sure he understood any of that. Finally he asked, "What's a gaming system?" He could guess, but his guess didn't make any sense in this context.

Pepper blinked a moment. "It's a small computer you play games on. I'm horrible at most of them, but there are a few puzzle games I have that were fun."

"That's very wasteful, using a computer to play games." His idea of computers being a little different to hers.

"Everyone where I'm from has a game system. Some of them are the size of a cellphone. Seriously, all hand held."

Ian looked down at his hand while he thought about that. "I can't imagine that." He decided not to ask what a cellphone was.

"Don't you have computers where you're from?" She looked up at him. After all most places had them right?

"Oh, yes," he said. They didn't have one at school, but he knew of them at least. "There are some places that have them, but I've never seen one, only heard about them."

"Only some places? The only homes they aren't in now are pretty much the Amish, I think some villages in Africa even have networks..."

He nodded. "They're expensive and take up a lot of space. And there's very little they can do that can't be done by hand."
