The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

"You see all of those little hissy fits on TV all the time, so I think you're onto something with that," Cindy tilted her head a little, giving him a smile as she looked up through her lashes. She really hadn't had a chance to flirt lately, what with all of these trainings and dead people stuff getting in the way. And creepy sponsors. Did she mention creepy sponsors?

"It wasn't too bad. Those definitely weren't the questions I was asked, though, but all in all, I thought everyone looked good."

Dan looked a little flustered by her flirting, but he instead of stumbling and looking foolish he managed to just clear his throat and continue with the conversation.

"What did they ask you?"

Aww, he really was a cutie. She'd give him a pass, instead of ramping up the flirting. Besides, the conversation was a tiny bit more interesting right now. Everyone else here thought it was either ridiculous or were horrified. So having someone who was... whatever he was. Maybe between horrified and amused? She didn't know.

"Pretty standard questions, I thought. How do you like it here, what do you miss from home, what's your favorite thing in the Capitol, yada yada yada."

Daniel thought about that for a moment. "Hm. I'm surprised they've changed it around so much. It used to be that you'd have a live interview on TV. It was harder to edit it then. Though I suppose they were trying to ramp up the hype over the new Victor."

"Changed it around so much? They changed it around a lot. I definitely don't remember being asked any of those questions." She pulled a face, taking a sip of her champagne with a sigh.

"Well, if they were trying to ramp up the hype, they did a good job with it. Maybe they didn't do it live because there's too many of us?"

"There are a lot of you," Dan agreed. "I'm surprised they're able to support so many. The most we've had before was four to a district."

"You know, I was wondering about that," Cindy said, moving a little closer to him. Like this was an intimate conversation, something just the two of them should know about. Up close and personal, and all that.

"They keep bringing in new people all the time. Aren't they going to run out of room for all of us, if they keep going? There's definitely more then four to a district now."

Dan shifted a bit and cleared his throat, clearly responding to the way she moved closer. "I suppose they'll have to expand the Tower in that case," he replied.

"Would they do that? I don't see many construction crews around, or are they just a little too unsightly, all those guys in construction hats, here?" It was a question and it wasn't, but mostly she was curious. Everything seemed so planned out here, and she rarely got to talk with people from this place like this.

"Where do you live?"

"A little bit closer to the residential area. My parents home."

"You still live at home?" No, wait, he did say his parents home, but that didn't mean... well, maybe it did.

[brother2dragons]

"Oh. My parents are dead. I inherited the house from them." Dan explained, hoping that would stop her from thinking he was some creep hanging out in his parent's basement.

Well, that was mostly true, but only because he had a lab down there.

"Good! Phew, you almost had me worried for a second there," Cindy winked, giving him a soft laugh. "Not good on your parents, but good that you're not some thirty year old video game geek living off of hot pockets in his mother's basement."

She appraised him with her eyes and grinned. "And you don't weight four hundred pounds, so you're definitely in the clear."

"Hot pockets?" Dan asked, wondering what kind of food that was supposed to be.

Cindy leaned in really close this time. "Shh, don't say it too loud. I don't need them putting me back on the screen and talking about more crap food." She grinned.

"But for you, I'll tell. Hot pockets are pretty much pastry, but you fill them with meat, sauce, and cheese, or eggs, cheese, and ham, or... mostly pizza toppings."

"Like some kind of meat pie?" Dan asked thoughtfully, as he tried not to be too distracted by how close she was getting.

"Pretty much, just less fancy. Seriously, back home, if you can't have fast food, you're probably not going to be eating much that day. Everyone is just so busy, they don't really have time for big sit down meals, you know?" Cindy shrugged. "Not even among families. Everyone's too busy with sports practices and business meetings and girl scout things."

She grinned. "You know, all the stuff that can get pretty boring."

"I can get that," Dan admitted. "I can be pretty busy myself. There's also just me so I don't tend to think about family meals."

Oh. That was actually pretty sad. She was usually by herself, too, so she knew how it was, not thinking about family meals. What was the point of making anything when it was only you in the apartment/house/condo?

She loved her life, she did. But sometimes it was annoying, seeing all those happy families in her life. "Do you have anyone? I got the sense that you peacekeeper guys don't... have wives or anything. Are you guys like priests, you can't have sex or anything?"

[brother2dragons]

"We aren't allowed to have families until we retire," Dan explained. "Our loyalty belongs to the Capitol. Our family is made of our brothers in arms."

"So you were drafted into a war, and you fight alongside your buddies who are in the same army. When do you retire?" Cindy tilted her head, and then because she could, she gave a flirtatious little smirk.

"Just having a family, or are you allowed to do the in between things?"

[brother2dragons]

"A usual tour is two years," Dan explained. "I'm a little different case, though. And what do you mean 'in between things'?"

Oh, honey. The fact that he didn't get that one made her grin grow wider. Cindy couldn't help but wonder how a guy like this ended up in what basically amounted to a police force. Unless he had some skills he wasn't sharing.

She was a spy, she knew about hiding abilities. "You know. Not having a family or a girlfriend-- or boyfriend-- but being able to fool around during whatever time off you get." Hey, she wasn't one to judge.

"So, why are you a different case?"

Daniel nodded a bit at her explanation, but he didn't really offer if it was something he was interested in. Instead, he focused on her question.

"Most Peacekeepers are drafted into the role." They join because they have debt or were convicted of a crime, but that just made them seem like a bunch of criminals, so Dan didn't supply that fact either. "I was a different case. I joined because I wanted to join. Because of that, I tested in as an officer. It's a career for me, not just some two year stint." He offered her a small smile, showing that he didn't really think badly of those who did join for two years, even if it was out of a last resort.

"I'll probably retire in a few years though. I'm afraid I'm getting too old."

[undercoverprincess]

"So you enlisted, basically. They have some things like that back home for us. If you join the army or the navy, they'll help pay your way through schooling, teach you skills, all the good things." The way that she looks at him is much more appraising then before.

Respectful. "How long have you been with them so far, then? And what rank are you now, can you go any higher?"
