Welcome to the Victoria Ascendant, latest in the Ascendant line of luxury yachts as built by the Nadir company. Tonight, the Victoria Ascendant is the stage set for a spectacular party, also paid for by the company and specifically designed and organised by a team of event specialists overseen by your host for this evening, Timaeus Nadir- wealthy eligible bachelor, melodramatic heir apparent to the company chair, frequent sponsor of the Games. The Victoria Ascendant is fully equipped with every obscenely luxurious item imaginable, and practically drips opulence.

When first welcomed aboard you will be assured that your every need will be seen to, your every desire catered for. Staff are on hand to answer any questions you might have or guide you to various areas of the ship, provide you with food, drink, or suggestions of how best to take advantage of the Victoria Ascendant's many amenities- they are here as hosts, but also as salespeople for those of the guests with money to burn- this party is serving more than one purpose. Tributes who responded to their invite will also receive a delicate, hand-written note in a golden envelope as they board- the content of which will be posted as a reply to their response to this post.(I'll do this once your character turns up.)

Although the Victoria Ascendant has a magnificent dining room for formal, sit-down occasions, the food for the party will be circulating the various lounge areas and decks. There is also a buffet table, for those of you who prefer to help yourselves, and a fully stocked bar. Provided are a baffling variety of foods and beverages, seemingly unconnected- but each tribute will find that if at any point during their stay in the Capitol they have requested a particular food or drink item, it is available here. Or, at least, the closest approximation the catering staff could conjure up. Seating is provided in intimate groupings around tables for the most part, though there are large, sprawling couches against the walls. Central to the dining area is a magnificent aquarium filled with brightly coloured fish. Anyone looking closely enough will recognise them- varieties of piranha- but don't worry, they've been more than adequately fed and the glass is thick.

While there are various screens displaying the Games throughout the ship, Viewing is also taking place on an enormous screen, set up in a seperate lounge area with full floor-to-ceiling windows all along one side. Here, staff wait to take bets or help organise the giving of sponsor gifts. Large, comfortable couches line the room, and the central table overflows with a spectacular arrangement of edible flowers and fruit.

Later in the evening, you will be told that the firework display is about to begin, and invited to go up onto the main deck to watch. The fireworks themselves will be launched from smaller boats across the lake, and the display is set to be truly spectacular. It will be set to some music that Tributes may find familiar- various melodies pulled from the most recent Arena. The large swimming pool on the deck is open, but it is too early in the year to be comfortable to use. Instead, it is being used as an unusual centrepiece for the evening. Floating in the illuminated water is a gigantic iceberg, sculpted into a stylised model of the current arena and populated with frozen figures. Eagle-eyed Tributes may be able to spot themselves depicted in ice- more often than not, the moment of their deaths are the pose of choice, if a little tweaked for the sake of a more dramatic scene.

Timaeus doesn't seem to mind, more amused than revolted by her lack of manners or knowledge of Capitol etiquette. “You're most welcome. I tried my best to supply favourite food for all of my guests- perhaps you might like to try some of their selections too? It's always exciting to experiment and expand your horizons."

She beamed and nodded stuffling another pastry into her mouth, savouring the taste. She was still suspicious but he seemed nice, even if she couldn't work out his motive.

"Did you be drawing this?" She asked wiping her fingers on her dress before taking out the picture she had been handed.

He laughed, shaking his head. "Oh, no, I'm afraid not. I commissioned it, of course, and discussed the image I wanted the artist to create, but I'm not exactly artistic. Do you like it?"

She nodded, for once understanding the concept he was talking about. Sometimes her guardians were commissioned to kill people for others even if they weren't dark minded themselves and just needed people out of the way.

"I do be liking it a lot." She beamed, "I do be thanking you. And the artist." She gave a tiny stylistic seated bow, see she had manners sometimes.

Well, wasn't that just marvellous. Timaeus inclined his head in gracious response, his smile wide and obviously pleased.
"I'll make sure to pass on your thanks, my dear."

Well he hadn't told her to go away so she took another pastry with a smile. "They did be saying this do be being your ship, do you be liking being a sailor?"

He didn't really look like the sailors she had seen back in Gauig, but this world was very different than her own.

"I'm afraid I don't get to spend much time sailing," he laughed. "This kind of ship is... more like a floating palace, and I'm not a king. My company sells these yachts to rich people in the Capitol, and I organise these parties to show them off a little."

The girl wrinkled her nose again, but at least she had a motive. He wanted to sell the yacht and this was his way of showing everyone it.

It still didn't explain why she was invited, she didn't have any money. Well... that wasn't true, she had been given a card and told she could buy things with it (she had no idea how it worked but it had done so far) but she doubted she had enough to buy a boat.

"There do be being a lot of showing off here."

"There is indeed," he agreed with a rueful smile. "Quite distasteful. But that's the nature of the game we play."

"It do be being about showing off." She nodded, she was beginning to understand that, even if she was still piecing together the rest.

"It must be being a complicated game."

"It can be," he agreed easily enough. "Do you see that man over there? In the red suit. He's looking to buy a luxury yacht from us, but only if it is at least five metres longer than the one belonging to the man in the corner, in the blue and cream. My company has to satisfy them both, without ruffling any feathers."

She nodded, seeing the man in question, and the second man and thought about the dilemma for a moment, "But the blue and cream man might be being angry if the red man's boat do be being bigger, and he might be thinking that the red man do be thinking himself better than him. Which he probably do be doing, but you do no be thinking either are better and you do no be wanting the blue man to be thinking you do be thinking he is no so good as the red man.

So you do be needing to be convincing the blue man that his boat do be being good... or it do be being better than the one the red man do be wanting, even if it do be being smaller. Because small things can be better sometimes."

She wrinkled her nose again, it did sound very complicated, and she knew little about boats but she thought that Timaeus had a very hard job indeed.

He laughed and nodded, clearly amused by the little girl's grasp of business and ego. How delightful.

"Yes, I'd say that's a fair assessment. There will be a lot of careful negotiating and so on before we can finalise any deal, and I can't say I'm looking forward to it. I'd much rather be sailing..."

She looked at him carefully, "Do you no be liking your job?"

"Actually, I rather enjoy it, most of the time, though I'm far more interested in building ships than trying to sell them," he explained with a smile. "Have you ever thought about what you might like to do for a job, one day?"

Oh he built them too, that sounded more fun than trying to get stupid people to stop showing off for one another and buy the ships.

She blinked, another question no one had asked her before. She knew this was another world but she was still pretty sure they would frown on worshiping the dark god here.

But they had the arena so they didn't seem to mind about people killing each other. Eva had told her that it had happened before people were kidnapped and they had died for real.

"I do be having a job already." She told him, "Before I did be being kidnapped, but I will be doing what Priestess Elena do be telling me to be doing for a job when I do be being older."

"Bit young to start working, aren't you?" he chuckled. "Though, I can't speak to how things are done where you're from. Father gave me my first position at the company when I was 18- quite a bit older than you are now."

"I have been being working properly all of this year." She boasted, "Though I have been training all my life, eighteen do be being really old did you no be getting really bored waiting?"

Once she and her sister knew they would be allowed on solo missions once they were eleven they had been counting down the days, waiting impatiently.

He grinned. "I remember being impatient, come to think of it. But it really was quite a long time ago, and I probably should have just enjoyed the time left to me before I had to start working. But far be it from me to lecture you, my young friend. Did you try the cheesecake?"

It probably was, she grinned and tilted her head. "Cheese... cake?" It sounded bizzare but so had ice cream and that was delicious.

"Cheesecake," he echoed with a broad smile. "One of the requests of a fellow tribute of yours, actually, and quite excellent. I recommend it highly."

She grinned and looked over at the food table, one of the waiting staff came over and she smiled at him. "Can I be having some cheesecake please?"

Some was brought over quickly and she grinned. "Do you want to be sharing it?"

"I almost had an entire plate to myself earlier when we were setting up," he confided ruefully. "I don't think I could manage another bite. Please- help yourself."

"You did be eating all that?" Pruna was impressed and ate her own piece happily, not speaking as she did so. Her head tilted as the fireworks were announced and she looked at Timaeus suspiciously. "They will be only going up right?"

Someone had told her that fireworks were meant to explode in the sky and not on the earth. She didn't trust them though.

"Only up, and I'm told they're going to be spectacular," he assured her brightly. "I'd make sure you have a good viewing spot up on deck, if you can- you don't want to miss anything."
