District Tours: Train Ride

Prior to their departure, the Tributes have to suffer a photoshoot, a few interviewers asking them a thousand questions about how excited they are, and more than a few members of their style teams asking the Tributes to bring back mementos. "Don't worry about quality, dears, we can get that all here - we want you to bring us souvenirs for the novelty of it!"

The day of the trip, Tributes are roused bright and early, well before sunrise, and driven in Peacekeeper vans to the train station. It's all rather dour, and not like the start of a vacation at all; if one didn't know what was going on, and if the Escorts and head Stylists weren't chattering excitedly, they might think they were being hauled off to a war zone.

The trains, on the other hand, are plush, fancy things, and there is one per District. There's a single blockaded car for cargo, another for maintenance, driving and Peacekeeping staff, and then several others which are open to the Tributes. A dinner car serves three meals and has small snacks available throughout the day. Another car is an entertainment center with a selection of Capitol-approved films, and a the last one is the Tributes' temporary room. It has a bunk bed for each with sheets that was a truly intense threadcount, and a single massage chair in the back. The Stylists, Mentors and Escorts sleep in the same car, although separated by a partition.

Unfortunately, all the Tributes have to share the sleeping quarters, and it's first-come, first-served.

For the most part, the trip is so smooth that the surface of a glass full of water would not be disturbed. The trips to the closer Districts are a little under a day, but the furthest Districts - 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 and 12 - take nearly 48 hours.

[OOC: For Tributes accepted during the District tours, you can assume they arrived before the departure so they can participate in the District festivities. During the train ride there is still network access. There will only be this post and the party post from the mods for this event, so players are encouraged to make their own of their characters exploring their surroundings and enjoying the Districts.]

Oh. Well, that seemed fairly straightforward and not like it could in any way get awkward or go badly. Score one for Effie, D12 team lusus.

"I"ll start, then?" When no one registered any objections he took that as assent and shuffled the cards Effie had given him, picking one at random. Pruna, he knew already, so he passed over her and settled on Julie.

"Sing us a little of your favorite song."

He hadn't been there for Effie's announcement, but Peeta came in at a fairly early enough time in the game. There was still some figuring out things with the sleeping arrangements, so he hadn't gone straight to the beds like some people had.

"We're playing a game?" He looked around, going and taking a seat next to Signless. "This should be fun." He'd catch up easily enough.

Since she felt like the odd-one out, the last thing she was gunning for was starting it out. Or being picked. Or. Hell.

"You gotta be kidding." It surprised a laugh out of her anyway. "I thought she said fun."

Whatever. Singing was fun, sure, but she didn't make a habit of doing in front of anyone else. Ever. It was enough she'd ever had music since the end of the world; she'd had the little portable music players for a while, right after, before their batteries died completely, and then she'd had to hunt for another. Then it was the desperate stuff: a Walkman with batteries still in it, or records if you were lucky enough to find a player that hadn't lost its needle.

Julie rubbed her hands together, leaning forward as she closed her eyes. "I have to think of a good one." Because to her, even the crappy, 90's-era post-grunge was her favorite. Any song she could get her hands on had been a miracle in itself.

Something old. Universal. It wasn't hard to pick one because she was still a little light from that -- well, hard to call it a date, but it'd ended on a high note, so it was better than nothing. And it reminded her of him, that first song she'd heard from a record player in ages, with the authentic scratches and everything.

"Today the world is old," she started, and wow, her voice was scratchy as hell, and not nearly as deep. It smoothed out after a moment. "You flew away and time crew cold." Uh. Then a line she couldn't remember... she hummed the tune for a second, trying to catch it. "To think that spring had depended on merely this... a kiss."

Julie cracked an eye open. "Sorry, I'm no Sinatra." Really far from it. Since she was ready to push the game on so no one saw the heat in her cheeks, she zeroed in on Pruna. Hey, at least she knew the girl. Like. A little. "Hey, Pruna. Uh." She paused. No offense, Effie, but the cards were kind of boring. "What was the last lie you told?"

Pruna frowned, not quite understanding this game. Why did they have to ask each other questions, why was demanding the truth off people going to help them. Unless they found out each others weaknesses for the arenas. But what was making them tell the truth? No one here had any way to force truth, no one had any powers because the Capitol had locked them all away.

She looked at the cards and wrinkled her nose, no one else seemed utterly confused at what this game was meant to achieve though and so she stayed silent. The song was strange, not like the songs Pruna knew and she blinked when her name was called next.

The question made her frown, but she felt no pull, no compulsion to tell the truth. Unless it was very subtle. She went through all the lies she had told in the last few days, if there wasn't a compulsion cast on her - and if there was it was definitely different than what Priestess Elena could do because if it had been Elena she would have already spoken by now, unable to stop, then she could pick and chose, find a lie that wasn't too bad and wouldn't get her into trouble with Effie, or make anyone mad at her.

"I did be telling one of the stupid hair people I would be bringing them something back, when I do no be planning to because they do be stupid and do no be deserving anything."

So no mind control, that was reassuring. But it made the whole excersize even more pointless because surely people would just lie. But she looked around, also ignoring the prompt cards since they didn't ask useful information.

"Katniss. How many people have you been killing?"

Well. She wasn't expecting that.

Effie's game was already way outside her comfort zone, and Pruna had just confirmed exactly why. Without even thinking, she started to shift, to rise, to leave.

And then she saw Effie's face, and realized that the lecture she would get wouldn't be worth denying information they could all easily access anyway. Sitting down, taking a deep breath, she tried to control her pounding heart.

"I." She paused, trying to calculate in her head without actually thinking about it. Each one was etched into her, from Marvel to Eponine.

She couldn't.

"I lost count." She finally said, flatly, before going silent. And then remembering she had to ask a question.

"Signless. Do you have siblings."

There. Her turn was done.

Pruna blinked at Katniss, watching her. Noting how she started to get up, saw Effie's face and she wondered if she had asked a wrong question? Katniss was strong and had won an arena, Pruna couldn't imagine her going all leaky eyed because she had killed people.

It was pretty impressive though that she had lost count. She must have killed a lot of people. Her eyes watched Katniss a little longer before flickering to Signless while he answered Katniss' question.

Well, that veered off into uncomfortable territory amazingly fast. Signless for one was glad when Katniss asked him such a relatively innocuous question by contrast, even if, thinking about it, she'd asked the worst possible person.

At least he'd been among humans long enough to know what siblings were.

"Somewhere in the hundreds, at least, if not the thousands," he said after doing a bit of thinking and realizing that trying to explain the unique circumstances of his hatching was something best saved for maybe never. Troll reproduction was already confusing enough without adding in ectobiology and time paradox clones, and he barely understood how that stuff worked anyway. That had been Karkat's job. He missed Karkat already.

"I wouldn't have known them or been raised with them like humans are. But we all have the same Mother Grub -- the same parent -- in common, so by human definitions as I understand them we'd be related? I'm sorry, I know it's not a very good answer. 'None' is probably more accurate since we don't have that concept on Alternia."

He turned to Peeta -- Peeta was new, and Peeta probably didn't mind him flailing.

"Peeta. If your prosthetic could be shaped like anything except a leg, what would you want it shaped like?"
shinyisfalse: (welp that can't be good)

[personal profile] shinyisfalse 2014-01-16 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
They needed to have better questions on these cards. Even though some of these questions were obviously not from cards, but really. They need some better questions. Music, the truth, death, family, and now onto injuries. Okay. He can do this one.

It still took him a moment to process it, though; luckily, he was good at that looking calm while dealing with terrible things face.

"If it could be shaped as anything else, I think a ball that could roll would be useful. I'd probably get around a lot faster if I only had to roll myself everywhere." Peeta said mildly, looking down at the cards before looking over at Sandy.

"Sandy, if you could eat only one kind of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?"
justoutrunyou: (Default)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-01-16 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sandy perked up at the question and a moment of courage struck her.

"That's an ok question, but I'll do a dare instead." After all she regularly humiliated herself on TV, what was the worst Peeta could do to her?"
shinyisfalse: (you have to listen to this too)

[personal profile] shinyisfalse 2014-01-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Peeta was a little surprised, but anything would probably be better then more questions of increasing morbidity (he knew his question of fun would not last).

Except now he had to think of a dare. And he didn't want to humiliate her, or hurt her in any way. So now he was a little stuck. Shoot. What could be funny?

"Pretend that someone has hit a rewind button, and do everything you did before, except backwards, and slowly." Good? "For five minutes."
justoutrunyou: (We'll use masks)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-01-17 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She smirked a little at surprising Peeta. It was a petty victory but she enjoyed it.

But her eyebrow quirked at his dare. Then she shrugged and babbled some gibberish in slow motion as if she was talking backwards.

Then she rose to her feet from her seat and started walking backwards over to the kitchen cart with a glass where she vanished, then came back with the glass drained of juice, she had gotten a refill before the game.

The next five minutes was an awkward display of her shuffling around backwards till she was lounging in her seat again. Funny at first perhaps but unfortunately Sandy hadn't done all that much in the last five minutes so it wasn't five minutes of pure hilarity.

"There, done." She declared after what felt like much longer then five minutes.

"Effie..." She turned her attention to the one who had started all this musing thoughtfully for a moment. "I dare you to pour this glass of Ice down the front of your top." She held up her own glass of ice cubes challenging.

"Uh."

Effie froze. She wasn't exactly expecting to have to play. And if she was, she hadn't been expecting to get dared something like that.

Except she couldn't decline. It was bad for moral. And the game was her idea.

"Well, that's hardly..." She looked up, and saw she wasn't going to get any sort of back up. "Oh, fine."

She let out a huff, picking up the cup and holding open her shirt and dumped the cup down. Luckily the ice cubes were clean, and as soon as she felt the cold on her skin, she popped up, letting the ice fall straight through.

"There, all right. Julie, what's your favorite animal!"
justoutrunyou: (you think I'm cute?)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-01-18 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sandy laughed watching the dare be followed through and then groaned and booed when Effie immediately disposed of the ice.

"Aw weeeeak. Next time you're gonna have to hold them there." But she knew she'd been beat. She hadn't been specific enough.
