The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

"Is there such a great difference?"

Bert took a nearby chair and leaned in so he wasn't as easily overheard.

"Most men would do what they had to in order to defend themselves. But you will have to do better than that to survive these games."

Adachi turned toward him, slipping his hands in his pockets, keeping his casual posture. His tone was serious however, and there was a dark look hiding under his goofy exterior.

"You think I don't know that?" he replied, keeping his voice low. "I don't want to have to kill anyone if I don't have to, but these damn things need to stop."

"You could always find someone to kill you straight away so you needn't face it any longer than necessary."

Cuthbert peered around to the others in the lounge before snaking a finger up to point at himself.

"Oh! Look! I've found just such a man. He would kill you if you wished it. Quick and easy and as painless as he can make it."

Adachi jerked away from the kid, the clown look gone as he stood rigid, glaring down at him.

"You're enjoying this?" he asked, sounding incredulous despite the expression on his face. "Why?"

"I don't enjoy taking innocent lives. But I am in luck, because the life I took last arena came right back, as did mine when I was killed. What difference does it make, then, if I kill thee? You will return here safe and sound and I will win the luxury I deserve. I even offered to make it easy for thee. Either you want to win, or you should take the easy way out."

It was a sick sort of logic, but it worked for Cuthbert. And without knowing that sometimes people didn't come back, he was confident about it.

"That doesn't justify it!" Adachi snapped, feeling his hands curl into fists. "Just because we come back if we die in the arena, doesn't make it okay! We're still taking a life... and no one should have to go through dying more than once!"

"When I get to the clearing at the end of the road, I will make accounts for every life I've taken. But I doubt they will tally the ones who died and stood again not a day later."

There was a more dangerous implication there... that he had taken lives outside the arena. And that he made no secret of it.

"Gh…"

Adachi backed off at that, a disgusted look on his face. Dammit… just dammit. Was everything in this world this crazy?

"Damn monster…" he muttered, a small shudder running down his spine as another thought occured to him: the way he said that reminded him of a certain empty grey haired boy, rotting away in jail, waiting for the death that would likely come for him. That was not a thought he needed right now.
