The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.
As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.
And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

He does lean closer to try and get a look at where Karkat was punched. Someone had to look after him and it clearly wasn't going to be Karkat himself.
"What makes Terezi's tongue so odd anyroad?"

Karkat lowers his voice. "So she's blind, right? But she's got this freaky dragon synaesthesia shit going on. She smells and tastes colors. It's ridiculous as fuck."

He concludes that Karkat isn't concussed, at least by his standards. He ruffles Karkat's hair to try and diffuse some of the tension of touching him. And so that the Grand Highblood doesn't decide he's being inappropriate and smack them around again.
"Try not to get yourself too badly hurt before the arena. We're already set to fight to the death with all these other people, no reason to give them an advantage."

He gives a long-suffering sigh. "And, okay, I know she doesn't need me to defend her. But that doesn't mean I don't want to sometimes, okay?"

And then the irony hits him. He's doing exactly what Karkat is. He draws back more.
"You can take care of yourself, but you're the closest thing I have to a friend here and I want to make sure you're taken care of."

Then, after a moment, "You're my friend too, you know. That's one of the reasons I agreed to have the Initiate constantly whacking our nugbones."

"But 'twas well worth it if it means we can remain friends."
Since Cuthbert is fairly sure if he hadn't done something like that and just rejected Karkat right out they would have had a falling out and not been friends anymore.
