The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

The commercial was so strange. Even after the programming had moved on, Some stared, trying to parse it out.

"... Does that- mean they will h-have us working for them when we are out here, too?"

"Don't worry about it," she said from beside him, "We don't have to do anything we don't want to."

Which was a lie, truthfully, but it was a lie she wanted to believe and would die for. Showing something like this was too much and she was tired of playing their games. They didn't own her or any of them and it just made her so angry.

He gave her a flat, almost offended look. "Are you here by choice, then? Do you like the games?"

Holiday opened her mouth to bring on a torrent of how this wasn't going to last, how she didn't have to abide by their rules if she didn't want to, and how she could leave any damn well time she pleased.

But talk like that had consequences so Holiday immediately shut her mouth, obviously angry with the situation, before looking away again.

"At least they feed you," he grumbled. And then stopped, stomach turning over. "... I'm sorry," he followed with, lowering his head and turning his face away.

Holiday sighed, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, too." She knew better than to speak like that, really.

"I didn't mean to imply they're starving any of us," he mumbled. After all, there was that paste for him and Ele. Even if he was sure it wasn't food.

Holiday let out a sigh, leaned forward, and rubbed her temples. "They're wanting us to argue with each other, you know. They want us to speak out."

"I know. And I don't wish to fight, here or in their arenas. But this..." He gestured to the screens, which were replaying bits of the just-finished interviews. "Is vicious."

"It's bait," she explained with a sigh. "So long as we don't make anything out of this, then it's just wasted effort on their part."

"Do you think they did it for us, just us? Or for the rest of the city?"

She thought for a moment before letting out a held breath. "Swaying the opinions of the public isn't a bad thing for them, but I think their primary intention was to make us doubt ourselves and each other. Get angry over it. It's like they're testing us." Or getting them prepared for something bigger.

Or maybe it is just all a big prank.

"Well, we're angry. But not at one another, I hope." Though he was able to see where some of the things said might spark pain amongst the tributes.

"Not you and I, anyway," she answered since there were no hard feelings on her end. Even the argument she had with Neffa wasn't going to stay. The Capitol could only reach so far.

He looked back at the screen, but they'd completely moved on by then. He squinted at it anyway; his eyes were always slow to adjust and make out the brightly-lit images.

"What did they make of you?"

She smirked. "They put me in an advertisement for a kid's science set. The set came with real fake blood."

She didn't know if it was horrible, hilarious, or just sad.

He hesitated, trying to figure out what that could even mean. "... Fake blood... for kids? Why? Are they vampires?"

She looked at him and smiled. "No. I think they're just trying to make the arena seem like a fun thing to them." Then again, if they were going to promote her on a child's toy, she would rather them think that she was just acting in the arena instead of the truth.

A cold touch went down his spine, and the fur on the back of his scalp lifted slightly with a frisson of unease. "I- hadn't thought of that. That they would let... want their children to watch it all too..." The teeth of both mouths flashed in an angry grimace. "Is- is that it? Are they trained to it young, like fighting dogs?"

Well... "Have you seen them? At the interviews or on the streets? They act like we're celebrities... I wouldn't be surprised that they grow up to think that this is okay. In a way, they're innocent... sort of."

"I've seen them... They don't come up to me." But he'd seen them approach other tributes, excited and shining.

"... That's probably a good thing." They weren't... all that bad, she supposed... but there was still something in her that couldn't help but hate them. She didn't like feeling that way, but she did.

"I miss children," he said softly. "Children were my whole life, in my tribe. We protected them, like you're supposed to."

"I miss them, too," she answered quietly. There hadn't ever really been children in her life, though, except for her sister and Rex, if he could be counted. Still, she missed them and she missed people like them... She missed everything.

"I guess there's no sense dwelling in the past, though." She frowned to him without much more of a response to that. The old days were hard to think about.

"No, I suppose not." It was an effectively quelling thought. He'd never even have the chances here that he'd had in Bete Noire, to make a new family and hope for children of his own.

"Excuse me... I think I need to- It was nice talking to you."
