The advertisements hit hard today. Tune in at 6 o'clock, you won't want to miss this special! Everywhere a person could look, it was there, and the city was clearly excited for whatever this mystery event was.

As if that wasn't enough, escorts were encouraging Tributes to be in the commons, and a small feast of finger foods was laid out along one wall, extra avoxes available for drinks.

And, as promised, at 6 pm sharp, all the TVs flickered to the ever flashy Caesar, on an equally flashy tabloid-tastick reality style "interview" of the tributes. All the TVs in the common area light up with it, as well as the Districts suites, even if the TV had been off before.

Cinna nodded a bit and offered Singless a bit of a smile as if to say that he didn't care what was on the screen. They'd be able to fix this.

"Oh, don't give me a free pass like that, you never know what you'll end up with."

Privately, Signless felt extremely lucky that his team was, all in all, pretty competent. He'd feel a lot more uncomfortable right now if he didn't think there was some way for Peeta and Cinna and the rest of them to spin this positively.

"Whatever I end up with will be better than I could do alone, probably," he said, and it was true. His default hairstyle was 'dandelion scruff'. "Just don't shave me bald. I draw the line there."

"Oh, I wouldn't do that. The hair helps your horns stand out. I like the contrast."

"Oh, thank goodness. Karkat's been making me watch tapes of older Games and some of the stylists made... questionable decisions, I think."

There was just no way to spin 'entirely naked and bald and covered in sequins and glitter' positively. Poor, poor District 1.

"Have you seen the Games that I was a Stylist in?"

"I've seen the highlight reel of the 74th." He made a face -- even if it was primarily a love story, Karkat still always had to warn him to cover his eyes when the blood started. "Four times now. He's very taken with your work, and with Katniss and Peeta."

Cinna looks a little proud. "Technically, I only handled Katniss."

"Oh! They matched so well during the parade that I couldn't tell. I liked the fire. Was that your idea?"

"Yes it was. I'm glad you enjoyed it."

"It actually worried me a little, until Karkat explained it was synthetic. But it was striking."

He wondered, privately, if Cinna would ever try setting him on fire. Red was already an obvious part of his palette. Maybe too obvious?

"I think if you can make me look that good we won't have to worry about whether or not people think I eat humans."

"My plan is to make everyone under my care look that good."

"Is it harder, now that there's more of us?"

"It's only harder because I have to learn about each of your worlds in order to fully understand where you are coming from."

He made a face. "Right. On behalf of all trollkind I'm sorry that we're so ... different."

"Different isn't something to be sorry about."

"Not a lot of people would agree with you, I don't think. At least, not if you're different in the wrong way."

"People can be very stupid at times."

For a moment he just looked at Cinna. And then he started laughing, not a hollow or bitter laugh but real, honest to god laughter.

"Yes. Yes they can. I've never heard it put so well."

Cinna smiled at the sound of his laughter. "Our job is to limit the amount of time that we're stupid too."

"Right." Saying as much as he did, giving them those soundbites, was probably stupid. "I suppose for me that means being smarter about what I say and who I say it to. I have to put my best perambulation nub forward, right?"

Cannibalism was not that.

Cinna nodded. "You're group isn't the only one shown in this light. There's a mentor who sharpened her teeth because of it, and there are the grues too. We can move past this."

"The grues eat humans?" he asked, momentarily sidetracked. He hadn't known that. "Or other gues?"

"They eat humans. We seen it during an Arena."
