Dan's lab had been created shortly after his mother's death. He had built it to help him make gadgets for his team as he was back in the city to deal with her burial. In the end, it had mostly been a way to deal with being alone. Once he was back in the Districts the place had fallen to misuse. With the spur of the moment invitation he had given Tesla he found himself in it again, cleaning and getting it ready. By the time he had made arrangements for the Tribute's transportation to his home, everything was back in working order.

He was out of uniform when we went to great Nikola, but he wasn't entirely comfortable in his clothes. He wore something that was close enough to his uniform to pass him off as an off-duty Peacekeeper. He wasn't sure it would have been appropriate for him to see a Tribute while wearing one of his comfortable sweaters.

"This place isn't looking for Miss Congeniality."

Nikola opens his mouth to say something, then closes it, thinking for a moment.

"My work was never about killing."

"Not even the death ray?" Dan asks, brow raising a bit.

"Peace ray," Nikola corrects. "Defensive only."

"If you say so, sir."

Nikola throws up his hands in frustration. "It was entirely useless in an offensive capacity!"

Dan moves a little closer, trying to defuse some of the frustration. "You know that no plans of it survived your death," he explains in a calm voice. "Do you want to explain it to me to make sure I understand? Otherwise, we could always drop the subject and think of something else to do." He suggests the last part, thinking that they might want to go somewhere or do a little more work in the lab.

"As if I would have left the plans where the government could get their hands on them. After all that," Nikola grumbles.

He shakes his head a bit and eyes Dan thoughtfully. "What did you have in mind?" he asks, stepping closer.

"I'd keep them in your hands and allow you to burn them, if you wanted to," Dan says, though he knows he shouldn't.

Instead, he shrugs at the question. "Have you had a chance to do much sight seeing? I could arrange something if you wanted to see more of the Capitol?"

It makes Nikola smile, at least, and regard Dan with a new level of scrutiny.

"I haven't done anything official. Are you volunteering yourself as a guide?"

"I am," Dan replies. "It's safer for you to travel with a Peacekeeper anyway."

Nikola gives him a bemused smile. "Am I in danger on my own?"

"That depends on how many autographs you want to fill out?"

"I haven't even been in an Arena yet and I have fans?"

"Probably not as much as if you did," Dan says. 'It's still a little strange to think of it that way though. Before, most Tributes only had before their Arena."

"Hm. I must say, I like it better this way."

"Do you? Not many other Tributes seem to."

"They'd rather die and stay dead?"

"They'd rather not be here, I think."

"Yes, clearly. But given that they are here, this is the better option."

"It's certainly different. Even more to have grown adults in the Arena."

"It was always children before, wasn't it?"

Dan nodded. "Always. From ages 12 to 18."

"That would have been interesting to see."

"Each Game is recorded, if you'd like to do some research."
