Effie just glared down at her.

"I expected more from you." She said in a wilting tone.

"To scare that poor stylist half to death...abuse her so when she's trying to help you..."

She shook her head at the girl before her.

Pruna just let out an angry noise and kicked the wall again.

"Help me? How does putting holes in my ears be helping me?"

[mannersmatter]

"So you can wear earring, you silly girl." Effie made a tsking sound, before reaching up to push her hair away from her ears to show the baubles hanging from her ear lobes.

"They're decorative, and nearly painless."

"They do be looking fucking stupid." She told her with a wrinkle of her nose.

"How will they be helping me be winning?"

"I'll have you know these are designer." She sniffed, clearly insulted, before getting her head quickly back in the game.

"And the same way appearance always help you win. If you are appealing, people give you money. If people give you money, you have more of a chance at winning....food when you're hungry, medicine when you're sick."

Pruna wrinkled her nose again, she had no idea nor did she care what designer meant. They still looked stupid and she was glad Effie was insulted.

"So if I do be letting them put stupid dangling things in my ears people will be giving me more food?" She sounded suspicious, but she knew how important getting help in the arena was and didn't want to go hungry.

"Well. Among other things."

She had scented the blood in the water, and wasn't going to let go.

"If you do what your handlers say, you'll have more food. You'll have things to keep you warm, or cool you off. Maybe even weapons. Life will be much better in the arena for you."

And if she didn't they would make sure she starved and was weaponless. Pruna could recognise a threat when she heard it. She wrinkled her nose angrily. It wasn't much different than in the inn, if she did her work well and completed her missions she got nicer food as a treat.

But that was her job and her guardians had never kidnapped her and she had been with her sister. She wanted to scream in frustration. Instead she glared and pointed her finger at Effie. "Fine, you can be putting stupid fucking holes in my ears. But if I do no be getting a weapon I will be blaming you."

"Well, I can't promise anything, but we do do our best. And we do it better when our Tributes work for us."

She moves, bending her knees so she could get eye to eye with pruna.

"And if you were a Capitol citizen wanting to give money, would you rather give it to a poor, sweet little girl who just wants to survive...or a brat who throws things and your peers?"

She arched a brow at Pruna, waiting.

It took a moment for Pruna to meet her eyes, green angry eyes staring into Effie's as she spoke.

"Nobody do be giving money to brats." She said quietly after a moment sounding tired. Being so angry was exhausting.

Something occurred to her and she blinked. "Is that why you did be giving me a name? So people would be liking me more?"

Effie nodded, and, unsure, reached out to tuck a strand of Pruna's hair back in a soft gesture. More than ready to quickly pull her hand back if needed.

Because you couldn't be too careful, and some children bit.

"Part of it. And so that it made it easier to help you. A lot of our society runs on...knowing who is who. For example, we could not get money to you if you didn't have a name, because we wouldn't be able to have you entered into the computer system that runs all of this."

Some children did, but this one didn't this time. She just blinked suspiciously and nodded as Effie spoke. It made sense, sort of. Pruna had no idea what a computer was but there were a lot of tributes and so having names was probably useful.

"I do be understanding." She nodded, "People did be needing to be knowing who I did be being."

Effie nodded, pleased that she was seeming to make some sort of progress with Pruna.

"We want to help you, Pruna. That's what we want, more than anything else. Our ways are just....different than yours."

[knifewithnoname]

"They," She waved her hand towards the treatment rooms, "Do no never be explaining anything, they do just be doing things to me." And that more than anything was why she was so angry, back home her guardians had always explained her lessons clearly, briefed her before every mission.

The only time things had happened without explanation was when she was being punished, and here just felt like one huge punishment and she hadn't even done anything, much, wrong. "Everything do be being stupid and different and if you did really be wanting to be helping us you would just be sending us home."

[mannersmatter]

"Well, we can't send you home. And they just don't realize how...little you all know."

She was treading carefully, not wanting to loose the ground she had gained, but really...tributes could sometimes be a little over sensitive.

"If you would like, if something doesn't make sense...you can always come find me, and I will explain it."

Pruna wrinkled her nose, "You will be answering my questions?"

She didn't like the idea they couldn't send them home, they must be able to, they got them here in the first place.

[mannersmatter]

"I will indeed. As long as you promise me to behave." She pauses, not sure if that was a fair standard to expect from Pruna.

"As much as you can, at least."

[knifewithnoname]

Pruna wrinkled her nose as she thought about that. She tried to behave, most of the time. It was just everything here made her angry.

"I will be trying... Very hard."

Good end?

[mannersmatter]

"Very good. We'll get all of you out of there." There was a dark look behind her eyes, and she quickly smiled, covered it up.

"I promise."

Pruna blinked, both at the look and the words, wondering if she had heard wrong. But at the promise she gave a tiny smile and brought her hand up as if she were catching the words in the air, before putting that hand on her heart.

It was a childish gesture, one she had learned from the gang children she had ran with but Effie might get the unspoken acceptance of the promise, the fact she was being held to it.
