Who's this smaller, younger version of the Signless sprawled on another District Twelve couch, this time on his stomach? Why, it's Karkat Vantas, District One tribute and unexpected boy heartthrob. (For some reason, a large portion of Capital girls between the ages of ten and thirteen had decided that the surly young troll was absolutely dreamy and also not surly but brooding. Duh.)

Currently Karkat has a child's alphabet book in front of him and is studying it intently, while scowling. It wasn't fair that Signless had already taught himself how to read human letters and he was still behind. (Signless also had a lot more free time than him, given that he wasn't stuck being constantly photographed and interviewed by the human equivalent of Stripebeast Rhythm but whatever.)

An incredibly thick bodice ripper lies next to the couch on the floor as a reminder of Karkat's goal in all this.

"Signless, I told you ear-"

She stopped, pursing her lips. This wasn't Signless. A quick mental checklist brought up a name.

"Karkat, District one?"

And what was he doing just lounging about up here?

Karkat looks up. "Hi?" Capitol human. He was sure he'd seen her before. Fuck, who was she? Either a stylist or a escort, he guesses. "Are you Signless' escort human?"

She started to fluster at being called a human before realizing that...well, that was actually true.

"Effie Trinket, and yes I am. Might I ask what you're doing in our district suite, Mr...Karkat?" Her voice was friendly, still, and her smile broad, but also firm.

"Learning how to read human," he answers. Duh. "Signless said I could stay with him up here, since Hyperion is back from the arena." He says the other District One tribute's name like other people might say 'cat puke.'

"Look, I won't take up much space and I'll share his room when I need to sleep."

"Is Hyperion an issues?"

Effie, trained as she was, singled in on that point rather quickly. And large part of an escorts job, of course, was to solve issues. And no one said someones name like that without one.

Then again, there was bound to be bad blood in this situation.

"Hyperion is a psychotic douchebucket," Karkat says flatly. "I'll go into District One to meet with my escort and stylist humans, but I am not going to live with the same shit-panned freakshow that killed me and Signless." He was quite firm on that. If Effie kicked him out of here he was going to bunk with Cuthbert in Three, even if it would drive him crazy to spend too much time with him.

"Well, it sounds like there may be some friction on your team, then."

She folded her hands together, thinking things over. It wasn't proper, and those from District 1 might be upset...but really, in the end it would be doing them a favor.

"I suppose we do have the room."

If Karkat were human--or at least if he weren't an Alternian troll--this would be where he'd thank Effie. Instead he just nods his head. "Good."

"Good? You could at least say thank you. I am sticking my neck out for you, you know." She sniffed.

She was having none of your Alternian shenanigans.

Humans.

Karkat doesn't want to get kicked out, though, so he says, a bit reluctantly, "Thank you."

Effie smiles, obvious pleased. She is use to dealing with very ungrateful District children. Trolls can't be that much different.

"Very good. I'll discuss with your escort, see if this can't be a more on going solution."

She couldn't imagine any escort would object to less strife in their team.

Karkat nods. "Okay. He then goes back to the Human alphabet book. The current page has a barkbeast on it, so he's pretty sure the big letter that looks like a half-circle stands for the 'buh' sound.

She was about to start off, before hesitating.

"You know, my siblings have just out grown all their learning books. Simple things. Would you like me to gather some up for you?"

They would just go to waste at her mothers, after all. And if he was trying, well...she wanted to encourage that.

Karkat looks back up at her. Weird. Why would she just give him something? She barely knows him, this makes like negative sense.

"Yeah, okay," he hears himself saying. "Fine. But I can read, just not Human."

Back to his book. He turns the page, to find a trunkbeast. "Tuh," he mouths, tracing the human letter.

"Well, yes, but I doubt we really have a lot of literature in your language. And it is very responsible of you to attempt to learn the customs of the new culture you live with."

She gave him a smile.

"I'll get them next time I see my mother."
