Death, John decided, was something no-one should have to live through. Where being shot and being absolutely certain he was going to die had been terrible, and had taken months of physical and psychological rehabilitation, dying and being brought back in a perfectly functional body was much more of a disorientating disconnect. He felt detached from reality.

Before Sherlock had rejoined him in the Capitol, John had spent much of his time trying to prove to himself that he was actually here, not always consciously. He walked as far as he could along the streets, visited strange little cafes and bars and hauled himself back to his suite, exhausted and burned out, hoping he'd be too tired to dream. His mood lifted a little once his friend returned, and there were a few notable people whose company he not only enjoyed but looked forward to enjoying, but the itch to get out for the sake of getting out only intensified the longer the days dragged on. There was nothing comfortable about life here, no routine he could settle into and feel like he had a handle on. The long and short of it was, he was useless here in the Capitol, and it was eating away at him.

"Rebecca Holiday," she answered in turn, shaking his hand. "I'm in 8, but I think the districts are just a formality more than anything else." It's not like there's actual teams in the arena.

"It's a hangover from their old tradition, isn't it? From when they pulled Tributes from the districts, rather than elsewhere. I think there's probably a very good reason we haven't been allowed to visit the places we're supposed to represent."
He smiled, and wet his lips. "May I join you?"

"That's what I've heard," Holiday nodded, "Despite their willingness to keep me away, I don't think I would mind seeing District 8." It can't be worse than here.

"Sure." Holiday gave him a big smile and waved to the seat across from her.

He sat opposite with a cautious but friendly smile. "Which one's Eight, again? Mine's lumber, apparently. I imagine something a bit like Canada. Cold, trees, not much else."

"Textiles, I believe," Holiday answered back with a smile. "I have no idea what that would be like, but I still wouldn't mind seeing it for myself.

"And I like Canada. I've been there a few times where I'm from."

"Never made it to Canada," John sighed. "A lot of the middle east, Asia, Africa, but never Canada. Seems hard to believe nothing exists outside of Panem, doesn't it?"

"I've been all over, but of course it was always for work." Seeing the inside of one building in Santa Monica just doesn't show off what the place has to offer, you know?

"That is pretty hard to believe. Honestly, I think everyone's a little too scared to find out what's out there since most believe it's just wilderness. Could be a whole civilization, though." It could be home.

"Who knows," he agreed with a soft smile. "But I doubt we'll be finding out any time soon, considering they won't let us visit even the District we represent. I would have thought it would make sense to get us invested, but still."

Holiday nodded and remained quiet for a moment. "I heard before that the victors they had before we started arriving would tour the other districts. I wonder if they still do that."

That would certainly be an incentive to win.

"That's a point," John murmured. "I don't think they do? I haven't seen anything like that happen. I suppose we're too much of a risk to let out on the general populace."

Holiday nodded in agreement with a turn of her lips. That's true and very unfortunate. "I wonder if we could convince them otherwise since it's happened before, but I doubt they would listen. Still, it's a nice dream, I guess."
