Dusk was falling when it started.

Anyone in the District 12 suite's would have heard heavy sounds above them moments before a loud explosion rocked the entire building. The electricity flickers once, twice, then goes out, replaced by cool, blue glowing lights running along the ceilings. Avoxes appeared silently, as they do, herding people from one room to another.

Once the door shuts, it doesn't open again until the last person is there, sealed shut. The windows in the rooms with them were darkened, and the computer would not respond to any request to show anything. However, food could be called to the room, the trays appearing as they normally do. But the doors would not budge, and the cool blue lights stayed the only light source, the only power.

Although there was nothing to see, there was lots to hear. Banging, foot steps in the halls, on the floors above, explosions, straining metal collapsing, scraping down the side of the building. Occasionally the repetitive rapping of gun shots. Yelling. Screaming. Those near the top of the building could smell smoke, at times strongly. The elevator can be heard moving up and down, even though it doesn't respond to any calls from those trapped.

The sounds last into the late night, finally quieting around midnight. Finally, at 1 am, a calm, cool voice comes over the loud speakers.

"The rebellion forces have been repressed. We will be clearing the building for the next few hours. Please stay patient and sleep well."

"Oh." His eyes got a little wider, and he looked around nervously. "Well, there's some good stuff too? The food's great. And the clothes are...interesting."

"The clothing is definitely something. Every now and then, there's a trend that's worth following. I wouldn't say that goes for all of them, though," she agreed, glad he caught on.

"I mean, I'm...y'know, not big on fashion, but it's fun to see," Atticus said, wondering now how dangerous this place was.

"Neither am I." A soft attempt at a laugh. Judging by the sounds of it, it was a rare thing to behold. "It's too much to ask that the Capitol appeal to that."

"Yeah, I guess. They do seem to have pretty much everything here, though, don't they?"

"They do. You name it, and it's probably somewhere. If it's not, just describe it in enough detail, and they'll probably have it soon enough."

"Man, you know what I'd love to find here? Mountain Dew. Do they have that where you're from?"

She laughed a little. "We have it. Not in France specifically, but I've heard of it before."

"Mountain Dew and Doritos," he said, laughing as well.

"But at least they've got good coffee."

"They do. If you find the right areas of the Capitol, it even feels like home every now and then. Or the best attempt they could have made."

"Yeah, I found a great coffee shop the other day. Almost like Starbucks."

"That's something." She'd never been that partial to Starbucks, not when she could find a decent local cafe just around the corner. But she understood the sentiment.

"I used to sort of live in Starbucks." He didn't particularly care for it either, but his parents used to send him Starbucks cards in bulk.

"Why's that?" She asked, actually curious before adding: "I used to walk by this little coffee house every day on my way to the college."

"Oh, yeah, there was this great independent shop down the street from my apartment. But...well, my parents would send me Starbucks cards, like, every week? So it was cheaper to go there."

A smile tugged at her mouth. "That makes sense. Why, though?"

"Because they loved me and they lived in the suburbs?"

She shrugged, accepting that well enough. At least it made sense. "My parents lived in a different country from me when I lived on my own," she offered instead.

"Oh! Wow, really? How far away?"

"They were in England, I was in France."

"Oh, well...that's not so far, is it?"

"Far enough, wouldn't you say?" She asked, smiling a little.

"I guess? But that's like, what? New York to Ohio or something?"

"I wouldn't really know. I've never been to the States for any extended period of time. I suppose it's not that far. I didn't really mind it one way or another."

"Well, that's good. I kinda liked being close to home, really."
