Dusk was falling when it started.

Anyone in the District 12 suite's would have heard heavy sounds above them moments before a loud explosion rocked the entire building. The electricity flickers once, twice, then goes out, replaced by cool, blue glowing lights running along the ceilings. Avoxes appeared silently, as they do, herding people from one room to another.

Once the door shuts, it doesn't open again until the last person is there, sealed shut. The windows in the rooms with them were darkened, and the computer would not respond to any request to show anything. However, food could be called to the room, the trays appearing as they normally do. But the doors would not budge, and the cool blue lights stayed the only light source, the only power.

Although there was nothing to see, there was lots to hear. Banging, foot steps in the halls, on the floors above, explosions, straining metal collapsing, scraping down the side of the building. Occasionally the repetitive rapping of gun shots. Yelling. Screaming. Those near the top of the building could smell smoke, at times strongly. The elevator can be heard moving up and down, even though it doesn't respond to any calls from those trapped.

The sounds last into the late night, finally quieting around midnight. Finally, at 1 am, a calm, cool voice comes over the loud speakers.

"The rebellion forces have been repressed. We will be clearing the building for the next few hours. Please stay patient and sleep well."

"Yeah," Kevin said. "Everyone in England talks like that?"

Alex shrugged, then lead against the wall. He wasn't particularly curious about the other boy, but a little casual chit-chat beat the gnawing boredom.

"No. Most of my mates have a London accent and depending what part of the country you're in, people sound different. Not everyone in the States sounds the same after all."

"They don't?" He stared at the other boy. Clearly he hadn't traveled much before now. "I never heard anyone talk different before I woke up here."

With as spread out as the States were, Alex supposed the accents weren't as closely clustered as England's would be in comparison. Still, he found it a little hard to believe. This kid must have never left his home state. "Not even on the telly? ... Television."

Kevin shrugged. "Most tv is stupid. The adult channels are cool and when the blow shit up. Everything else is boring." So, maybe he heard other accents on tv but he certainly wasn't paying enough attention to people talking to remember them.

"I suppose. 'Reality' shows are anything but. I never could understand why everyone at school was always talking about them. Why watch a bunch of people making spectacles of themselves when you could be out playing footie with your mates."

"What's footie?" Kevin asked curiously. He wondered if it was an English thing or if it was just new since he dropped out of school.

"Football. Oh, right, they call it 'soccer' in the States." Alex never could understand why Americans called a game where the feet only occasionally touched the ball 'football'.

"Soccer's for normal kids," Kevin muttered, not meeting the other boy's eyes. But he missed playing ball with his friends after school back when he had friends. Before he realized people were too dangerous to make friends with.

Alex arched an eyebrow. So this guy didn't consider himself 'normal'.

"Soccer is for everyone," Alex replied. "Rich, poor. English, American. Normal... and not so normal."

Because Alex was definitely not 'normal' himself.

No, Kevin definitely didn't consider himself normal. It wasn't just his connection with fire. It was Yvette and what happened with his dad. "Hard to play soccer by yourself."
