Everyone who was coming was probably already there, so Guy climbed up on one of the armchairs and stood there as if presenting a speech.

"Okay, okay, so - preemptively, I just wanna say thank you for being here on this auspicious day. I just know the Capitol is going to present my life story masterfully, with sensitivity and grace, and I wanted you here with me while experiencing the joy that is me."

The sarcasm was thick enough that if there'd been a pit full of it, it would've trapped many animals so that scientists could study their bones thousands of years later. So many animals.

"Ah, there's probably going to be a part around the beginning where I have to cover my eyes. If I have to do that, can somebody prod me when it's over?" His face went a little more sincere. "Seriously, though, thanks. I do really appreciate you being here." He raised his eyebrows slightly as if mentally preparing himself for what was to come. "I have no idea how this is going to go, so..."

He needed this. He needed to treat it like there would be a scary part of the story where he'd cringe, that would be over quickly, and he needed to try to laugh the rest of it off. It might not work, it depended on how bad it really was going to be, but he wanted to at least try, and that was a lot easier with friends than trying to do it alone.

If anyone wanted to chit-chat before the viewing, there was a little time.

Guy himself was sitting perched at the head of one of the chairs, seemingly cheerful, but the way he kept zoning out and how he was twitchily playing with the frayed edges of his poncho with his hands betrayed that maybe all the good humor was only half sincere.

He was definitely a little nervous, but seemed cheered by his friends being there, as if it made him feel a little more secure.

He had reason to feel insecure, judging from the small burn scars on his arm and cheek that hadn't been there before.

"Oooh, it's starting," said Guy as the beginning of the expose flashed on the screen. "Where's the throwing popcorn?"

He gestured to the area in front of him.

"The throwing popcorn needs to be in a centralized location," he said in a mock serious voice, as if it was an absolutely dire logistics problem. "We all need immediate access."

He was hiding his anxiety very well, judging from all the goofing.

"The party start yet?"

Mindy arrived, sporting her own popcorn, hair in braids and actually looking pretty precocious.

"Oh good, I got here early. Guess I get the best seat then!"

"Noo. You get the feet seat," teased Guy, in a brotherly fashion, kicking at the seat of the chair he was perching on top of with his bare foot and moving both his legs to rest on the same armrest so she actually had room to sit in it. "I'm going to stick my feet on you the whole night. I need a leg rest."

Mindy snickered. "Dude, if you're even thinking of that, you better tell me that you showered today. I'm not about to start watching and eating popcorn while smelling your stank all night. This is supposed to be something we actually want to laugh about."

Though in retrospect, maybe she could see herself laughing about this later.

"Who else is coming to this?"

"I actually bathed yesterday in anticipation of people being crowded in a room with me and not having the same ideas on hygiene, thank you very much," he said, "and I dunno."

He shrugged.

"I left it open but some people might have other stuff to do or might not want to be next to me if anything intense is on there because that could get awkward, so basically whoever's comfortable with coming. I didn't want to invite anyone specifically in case they were uncomfortable with it."

Sarcasm completely intended. Mindy had her own idea about who actually constituted as civilized, and was barely sure she even fit that category. Azula certainly didn't think so.

"Ok, but I mean, its you story. Won't you know when the awkward shit happens?"

"Don't get too excited because that was the first time this week," said Guy cheekily. "And maybe? It depends on how they twist things. I know if they show anything with my family - my first family - it'll be bad, and the time after, when I was alone? Before Belt? That was bad for a while, too. The rest was good and bad, though. So they might show the good things where I figured out all my little tricks and hung out with Belt and got lonely sometimes but was mostly happy, or they might show the bad things like when I was about eight or nine and fell down a cliff and into a nest of frogbees after getting chased by a koaleopard and spent the rest of the night hiding in a cave crying while my hands swelled up to the size of juju fruits."

A shrug.

"I just figure if someone doesn't want to sit next to me, worried they'll see when I was unhappy because it'd make them sad, I understand if they don't want to come. Because they might do that. Focus on all the sad parts. Instead of the happy ones. I had a lot of both."

"Oh god, you're trying to kill your first guest. Truly this place had warped your values."

She sighed. "Guy, come on. I'll sit next to you whether you're a shivering heap on the ground or whatever. But let's not kid ourselves. We're watching propaganda with a fascist slant. Do you really think they want to show the happy times of your life for any reason other than a set up?"

"Probably not, but that doesn't mean I know which sad times they'll use or in what particular order."

He moved down to sit on the arm of the chair.

"So I dunno what to expect. It might be something full of sad things that we can laugh off as ridiculous because they go overkill. Or not. That's kinda why I need you guys," he admitted. "Either way."

People to laugh with or people that would join him in under-the-table town when it was over, so to speak.

"They'll go for big trauma. Remember, if Venus and Shepard were framed for being ruthless boss bitches, they're going to do everything they can to color you in a certain way. It's just got to look good for the cameras."

And she had an idea exactly how far they'd go.

"We'll laugh at what we can, throw popcorn at everything else."

"I'm at least prepared because I have a few guesses." He started ticking off fingers as he spoke, "They will, without a doubt, call me a caveman even though I'm a nomad. They might try to make it look like I'm the one that shoved my family into the tar pit. I'm ready for that one - they seem to like the dark secret angle. They will almost definitely make me look stupid and primitive and backwards. My escort Stephen said he'd work on shifting that but I doubt even he could get it changed that quickly. And equal chances they'll make me look like some poor hapless, naive waif that couldn't take care of himself that should be pitied or a ruthless barbarian that used to hit people in the head over just a hunk of fruit."

He paused reflectively, then ticked off another finger. "Or both. They could possibly merge both, where I was pitiful and then took out my undying and merciless barbarian caveman rage on the world."

"Oh, the caveman thing is definitely going to happen. It's not like they have more to go than that, and they don't need to. Splice in some bad plot, chop up some parts, edit some things in? Trust me, they will most definitely give you a thorough character deconstruction through their eyes. The sad thing will be how many people eat it up."

"Someone's going to invent some kind of new, trendy extra large spoon for them to eat all these exposes up with, just you watch."

He held out his hands wide to show how large the spoon would be.

"Thiiis big. And it'll be covered in diamonds. And maybe those tiny yippy dogs with curly hair they carry around in their purses so much. They'll glue a few of those on."

"I didn't bring my own beer," Susannah says, standing once more on her prosthetic legs by the elevator, "but I don't have to drink it. Is there room for me in your watching party?"

She's wearing the necklace Guy made for her.

"I can see that," Mindy said, chuckling. She'd been skirting around the issue, but now she wanted to know and, as a friend of his, she thought she at least deserved that much.

"So. Tell me where you got those scar marks, and I'll tell you where I got mine."

"Boooo," Mindy said, pretending she cared about the beer. "You mean we have to see this sober? That's just cruel!"

She motion for a seat near them. "Don't get too close to Guy. His feet stink will kill you."

Stephen wasn't actually watching at first. He was doing a quick headcount and texting the Escorts of the non-D6 guests. He wanted to make absolutely sure everyone was accounted for and no one was using this party to skip out on mandatory viewing -- that would get them all in trouble.

It was a little rude, honestly: he was sitting there tapping away at a tablet as though he didn't care about all the lies they were about to be fed about Guy's life. Way to be one of those jerks who text during movies, Stephen.

And someone happened to notice said rudeness.

"We're not boring you, are we?"

Guy punctuated Mindy's words by lightly throwing a pillow at the side of Stephen's head.

"You're supposed to be helping me with how the Capitol portrays me all wrong, right? They probably didn't listen to any of the things you wanted them to do and got it wrong again. How can you help me if you're not watching to see how they mess it up?"

He gestured to the TV emphatically.

"Bathed yesterday. That's a single day." He was sitting on the headrest of the chair and now he took his feet off the armrest and started to poke at Mindy with his toes.

"I've gone much longer and no one's shriveled up and died on contact with the way I smelled."

"Or we could both not tell each other anything. That's something we can do."

Dammit. After she hadn't brought it up at the museum, he thought he was in the clear.

He sighed.

"Azula came to throw something in my face and was cackling over it, I got mad so I insulted her because she's a terrible sadist, then she kicked me into the fire I was making in the training center."

The pillow hit him square in the side of the head, finally catching his attention. "Hold on, hold on!" he said, still tapping at the tablet. "This party took paperwork, you know! We have to make absolutely sure everyone is accounted for, and Purnia is yelling at me -- just a second --"

It was actually a few seconds before Stephen turned off the tablet screen with a wave of his hand and looked up.

"Okay, okay, I'm watching!"
