District Tours: Train Ride

Prior to their departure, the Tributes have to suffer a photoshoot, a few interviewers asking them a thousand questions about how excited they are, and more than a few members of their style teams asking the Tributes to bring back mementos. "Don't worry about quality, dears, we can get that all here - we want you to bring us souvenirs for the novelty of it!"

The day of the trip, Tributes are roused bright and early, well before sunrise, and driven in Peacekeeper vans to the train station. It's all rather dour, and not like the start of a vacation at all; if one didn't know what was going on, and if the Escorts and head Stylists weren't chattering excitedly, they might think they were being hauled off to a war zone.

The trains, on the other hand, are plush, fancy things, and there is one per District. There's a single blockaded car for cargo, another for maintenance, driving and Peacekeeping staff, and then several others which are open to the Tributes. A dinner car serves three meals and has small snacks available throughout the day. Another car is an entertainment center with a selection of Capitol-approved films, and a the last one is the Tributes' temporary room. It has a bunk bed for each with sheets that was a truly intense threadcount, and a single massage chair in the back. The Stylists, Mentors and Escorts sleep in the same car, although separated by a partition.

Unfortunately, all the Tributes have to share the sleeping quarters, and it's first-come, first-served.

For the most part, the trip is so smooth that the surface of a glass full of water would not be disturbed. The trips to the closer Districts are a little under a day, but the furthest Districts - 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 and 12 - take nearly 48 hours.

[OOC: For Tributes accepted during the District tours, you can assume they arrived before the departure so they can participate in the District festivities. During the train ride there is still network access. There will only be this post and the party post from the mods for this event, so players are encouraged to make their own of their characters exploring their surroundings and enjoying the Districts.]

The good news was R didn't start his very first train ride drooling on someone. Whatever the Cure was doing to his body, it apparently took a break on the leaking-body-fluids-everywhere front and doing...whatever was doing right now.

Sam would find the door to the dinner car blocked by another District 4 Tribute. He'd be almost as tall as Sam if it wasn't for the hunch in his shoulders and a case of crappy posture. For some reason R seemed to find the floor interesting, swaying gently where he stood as he ogled a piece of tile. Something about the way it caught the light appealed to him. If he swayed one way, it sparkled. If he swayed another, the sparkle jumped to a different patch and on and on.

After awhile he seemed to notice he had a visitor. R's head came up as he turned toward Sam. The sad part was the first thought he had was you could feed a lot of zombies with a guy this big.

"In...way?" R asked. He peered at Sam, trying to work out if they'd met before and he'd forgotten or this really was a first time meeting. With the fog most zombies wandered around in, usually it was hard to tell.

Sam blinked. He'd been watching the guy for a few minutes, wondering what he was looking at. And whether he was okay. It seemed, now, that he really wasn't.

"No," he said, assuring him. Though there was something disturbing about the young man's pallor. "I just... Are you all right?"

R grinned behind his muzzle. Tried to grin. It was still a little rusty, the facial muscles still stiff with rigor mortis but compared to the last Arena, he was way better off.

"Am...good," R groaned. He decided to shuffle left, giving Sam a little squeezing room if he needed it. "Having...good day. First...train ride."

Was it Sam's? If so, he seemed to be taking it pretty well, wasn't plastered to the windows or anything.

lol whoops sorry, didn't cotton on to the fact there was a muzzle!

As the kid turned towards him, Sam tried not to shudder. Something was seriously wrong, here. His skin prickled with that feeling he got on a hunt. "Um. That's nice," he said absurdly. "Look, I hate to be rude, but... is there a reason you're, um..."

He gestured vaguely in the direction of R's face.

"I mean, do you need any help?"

He'll have a muzzle on between Arenas

The muzzle? It's a fashion statement in some parts of the Capitol, according to his Escort who's probably grabbing at straws and trying to fix his self-esteem - maybe she thinks he stays awake at night thinking about all the fans the other Tributes have.

"Can't...take off." R purses his lips behind the muzzle as he makes eye contact with Sam, who's got that look like he's not sure what to do with him. Could be he's sizing him up, trying to decide if he'll look like death warmed over in the Arena. "Not...allowed."

He pauses, reviews what Sam said and realizes maybe he missed something. Conversations with the Living is much more demanding than he remembers. Less pauses, for one.

"Still...working...on tan," R creaks out a grin. Maybe he'll actually get one at District 4?

gotcha

Sam laughs despite himself at R's final comment, because it's absurd and funny, and not what he'd been expecting. He likes the guy, despite everything, and it doesn't hurt that he'd said "can't" with regard to the mask.

"Hey. I'm not gonna hurt you. I mean..." He casts about for a way to make it believable, but there's no way to make any of this make sense. At least for him. "I'm Sam Winchester." He holds out his hand. "And you are?"

Oh good, Sam likes his jokes better than Julie.

"Hi...Sam," R takes the hand, pleased to get another chance to practice his handshakes. His brand of it is a lot like shaking a dead, stiff fish without the slime. Sadly, Sam's probably had a lot worse in his line of work. "I'm...Rr."

He shakes it for a few seconds too long, a floppy up-and-down motion.

"Not in...Arena. Can't...hurt," R says with a shrug.

DAMN YOU, LJ JUGGLER!

[personal profile] iwatchtjhooker 2014-01-20 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Sam's already aware that something's very wrong with... 'Rr.' So the handshake isn't a surprise, but he's still trying to puzzle out how what he's noticed jives with the pleasant manner they guy's going for.

"I don't mean that," he says. "Sure, it's against the rules. But I don't want to hurt anyone. I just want to know why we're here."

"I think...showing off," R gives it a guess. "Escort...better...answer."

Or one that at least has less pausing and vacant staring. He drops his hand to his side, unsure how to explain it to the new guy who seems really, really new. Most Tributes aren't this open about the "I don't want to hurt anyone" thing.

"Talked...others? Other...fours?" R flops a hand at the rest of the train.

"A few," Sam admitted, getting a hang of the broken speech. "But I will. I just... Look, is there anything I can... do?"
