Cuthbert had a decent idea of how to alleviate this stranger's boredom, and it would work to his advantage as well. He was brushing up on as many of his skills as he could, it was just that some things worked better with a partner. He called out to Jim as soon as he walked in, drawing attention and trying to gauge his reaction.

"How are you with knots, stranger? Because we could always have some first hand practice."

Bert pulled out the scimitar he'd picked up while he was waiting and made a few passes through the air with it.

"Or we could raise the fire in you a different way. How kind I am being to let thee choose."

"They went out of style sometime in the 21st century." Jim bent and lifted the rope, letting it slide through his palms. "You see it often enough in developing civilizations. But..."

He makes a serviceable knot, because really with his luck he needed to know what to look out for and the fastest way to escape. It didn't pass his notice that he was chatting with a guy who took a strange amount of pleasure in the idea of hanging someone.

He was more amused with the idea that all of the people who came from advanced civilizations seemed to be less equipped to deal with the arena than he was.

"Developing, is that a word you use for a civilization you consider beneath you?"

He set the scimitar back down again and went to get more rope.

"Mayhap you can build a better trap than a simple man like me."

Most of them came from times of peace. Or something like it. Not like life didn't suck for any of them, but it's an entirely different kind of life.

"Developing or Pre-Warp. They can't get into deep space. Doesn't mean they're beneath anyone."

Jim laughed and shook his head. "Not a chance. That's one skill I don't come equipped with."

Cuthbert wrapped the rope around his arm again and just smiled at Jim.

"So what skills are you equipped with? And don't start with a quick wit and a lose way with words, I've already locked both of those skills in and clearly have no need of more practice."

He might be fascinated to hear about the world Jim came from someday, but for now he was relatively unimpressed. In a subtle (or not so subtle) act of intimidation Bert fashioned the rope he was holding into a noose and let it hang slack off of his arm.
