It's probably not unusual for people to group together and watch the violence unfolding. The Psiioniic certainly doesn't see why it would be strange, and he looks remarkably unimpressed as a recap plays some especially gory scenes. He seems to be prepared for a crowd, with plates of food nicked from the District 2 suites scattered around him. He even prepared a sign for his little shindig:


Of course, most people won't be able to read the sign, and do you even know how long it took him to find a marker even close to the proper shade of yellow? Too long, that's what. But now he's prepared for the final cullwatch, and ready to spend time with members of his species. And people who might be curious as to what the hell he's scrawled on the sign.

(You would think something like "fiinal cullwatch" is pretty self-explanatory, but you could never be sure with aliens.)

"He's Signless' friend, not mine," Karkat says, irritably. His own four-horned athhole friend is fuck knows where and every time he sees the Helmsman it just reminds him of who the Helmsman isn't. "If he's even that anymore."

He's feeling pretty annoyed at himself. Not only did his plan to reunite Signless and the Helmsman not work out in the slightest, but he's pretty sure that the Helmsman and the Initiate are moirails now. Signless is probably diamond-broken and it's all Karkat's fucking fault. Good job, Troll Einstein.

"Is jealousy one of the feelings your kind has? Or is this just a different sort of pity I don't yet understand?"

Because he is taking this pouty attitude as a sign that Karkat is jealous of Signless for being in better with Psiioniic than he is. He wants to help out but at the moment he has no idea how. There's plenty of booze and food and even some half decent entertainment, what more could he want?

"I'm not jealous of that lithpy athhole," Karkat snaps. He bites down into his disc-shaped baked good decisively.

"He used to be Signless' moirail," Karkat explains. "That's the kind of pity where you try to keep the other troll from being destructive--or self destructive. It's all about getting them to calm their tits and not about mating, unless you're really kinky. Anyway. Some crazy shit happened with people being grabbed from all these different times and the Helmsman got grabbed from like sweeps in the future from when the Signless was and from what I can tell a lot of things went to shit between the two times. And the Helmsman blames Signless for it."

"So you want them to reconcile." Cuthbert is assuming a little there, since not all of that explanation came through well.

"I thought you might be a romantic somewhere deep in your blood-moving chest-thumper. You want Signless to be happy, and you wish to see someone you pity pity another."

"Yeah," Karkat says, ignoring the vaguely-off anatomy terminology, because Cuthbert's making an effort not to be completely annoying today. "Basically. I mean, I'm trying to do what I can for Signless, but it's kind of hard to when he's in the palest of pities for a fish-licking douchebucket ex-spaceship. I mean, it gets to you after a while when half your feelings jams are about the fuckshit he wishes he was piling instead."

"There were many words in that sentence that made no sense to me."

He shakes his head and tries again from a different angle. "Mayhap I can be of help, if my ideas about love are a bit off from yours. I do have a better way with words, if I do say so, and I do."

"There are a lot of words in your sentences that make no sense to me," Karkat mutters. "And I have a perfectly good way of words with people who speak my fucking dialect."

He sighs. "Try, then. But I doubt you'll have any better luck."

"Now I'm starting to pity both of us."

But he can see how much this means to Karkat and he does want to be friends, even if he's not sure how that's going to work at this point.

"I will do what I can, but only because Signless means more than a bit to me as well."

The corners of Karkat's mouth turn up slightly. There's a reason why he genuinely likes Cuthbert, even though he's as annoying as fuck sometimes. "Yeah. He's good at that."

The feeling on that is mutual.

"I have seen my death far too many times tonight, I wish they would find something better to show."

"They'll move on in a minute," Karkat says. "I think they're just showing everyone's kills and death to lead up to the showdown."

"Including yours, I wot." Which he is a little curious to see, since he wasn't there for it when it happened.

"Yeah," Karkat says. He looks pretty embarrassed at the thought of it.

"I know I've already cried your pardon for it, but I do regret not being able to protect you when the time came. But we will do better next time."

That's what he keeps telling himself, because he can't think of anything else to tell himself about it.

Karkat wants bristle and say he can protect himself, okay, he doesn't need some weird alien to take care of him, but instead he just lets out a weary sigh. "Yeah. We will."

He watched the replay of Karkat and Signless dying sadly.

"'Tis far less entertaining when it's your death they mock over and over."

"Yeah," Karkat says. He grabs one more disc-shaped baked good. "Look, I need to get back to Signless. See you around?"

"We should make time to train before we're called to cull again. Together, this time, so we might learn the best way to work together."

He doesn't want to fight again like they did the first time, even if it was exciting in its own way. He nods to Karkat as he leaves and goes off to see if he can talk Psiioniic into forgiving Signless any better than the younger troll did.
