I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make
Who| Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson
What| Realizing they’re on the same page about going back home complications. Also, Sam having to explain that he keeps inviting trolls to come home with them
Where| Capitol blindspot
When| backdated to before the binding plot
Warnings/Notes| None yet! Will update as needed
It’s not that Sam doesn’t want to go home. He does, he’s got a mother and a brother and a sister and a gaggle of nieces and nephews, and it’d kill him never to see them again. And he’d worked damn hard to achieve what he had, a place to call home, a job he loved, helping people and making a difference, having a routine.
But the thing is, he’d already settled into the idea of leaving that behind. Him and Steve, they were going to go off looking for Bucky, and Sam’d known that wasn’t something that was going to be a few weeks out and then back kind of deal. He was giving up his old life, ready for something new, and then he’d found himself in Panem.
And now… now he’s got a family here. Now he’s got a purpose, maybe even more than the one he’d had back home. Now he’s pretty much promised to see this through to the end, maybe even beyond that. He doesn’t know what that means for him, and he’s mostly just trying not to think too hard about it, but after talking to Kurloz and Terezi, it’s on his mind.
Which is why he drops down onto the bench he knows is a blindspot on one of his and Steve’s morning runs, waiting for Steve to settle next to him. He knows very well that Steve’d felt out of place back in their world, that there isn’t really much of a “home” there for him. Out of everyone, he’s hoping Steve might get at least a little bit of his conflicted feelings.
And at the very least, it might be nice to give Steve a heads up that Sam’s talked with two people about forming his own Avengers.
“I’ve been thinking, about the whole going back home thing,” he admits, but doesn’t say more than that, waiting to see Steve’s reaction.

But what Sam does say when he finally joins him, well, it makes Steve blink at the man for a second, having not really expected this topic. It's one Steve thinks about a lot, about what going home means for him, if he has a home back where he's from anymore, when he has most of the people he cares about here with him. How he wants to help people who want to go home get home but never really considers himself one of them anymore.
Hell, half the time he doesn't consider himself alive by the time this is over enough to go home.
He nods, not at all looking uncomfortable with the topic, just curious, turning to face the other man some as he gives Sam his full attention.
"And?" because part of him wants to know where Sam is going with this before he says much more.

He flicks water at Steve when he sits next to him, just because, before leaning back to get into the serious stuff.
Sam makes a tiny face at him. Of course Steve wouldn’t take that prompting, part of Sam knew he was going to have to keep going before actually getting a reaction out of Steve, he just -
All right, yeah, he knows what he just, and he lets out a breath before he forces himself to admit what he’s been struggling with. “I think I’m in this a lot deeper than I planned on being. Somewhere along the way, it stopped being about just trying to get out of the arenas and find away home for us. This whole damn thing, it - it feels like it’s my war now, too.”
He shakes his head, a little annoyed at himself - he was out, he wanted to stay out, and helping Steve out once and agreeing to go look for Bucky didn’t count as getting back in - but this does. He risks a look back over at Steve. “I’m kind of hoping I’m not alone here.”
