"Ugh." A roll of his eyes accompanies it, big and ridiculous with his contacts and and the wig perched on his head. It's a credit to Jolie's skill at pinning the thing down that it doesn't fall off, the way he tips his head. "Just get it out, nookwipe. I won't drain your mirth glands for you."

Still, he almost misses the laughter once, after the Initiate's gathered himself, he asks that question. It isn't doubt in himself so much as the unavoidable nerves of the situation, the knowledge that this is serious and that lives are riding on him. The Capitol won't do any revivals if they mess this one up.

He answers with a soft nod. "I'm not turning my back on it now, if that's what your asking." There's no accusal in his tone, for he's sure the Initiate doesn't mean it poorly. "You already know I haven't got anywhere else but this place. If I don't fight for it I won't have any place claiming it once the Capitol's brought down."

He makes a face. "Sure you would. THINK I'D BE ALL TO JUST LEAVE AT MOTHERFUCKERS AT FOR WHAT AIN'T GOT FIGHT IN THEM?" Okay, he might've way in the past, but still. "Terezi would have my ass if as I were to be doing such, don't you know."

And not in the fun way. Still, he's quick to steer the topic again away from her. Old habits dying hard and what fuckin not.

"YOU'LL DO FINE," He says, not out of seeking to comfort, just simple statement like it's a fact. Karkat was a chosen one, one of the surviving of them. That had to count for something, even if he wasn't clear on the specifics.

"It's not about you," he corrects, "or her. You think I would be able to live with myself if I didn't do anything for this place?" And though calmly asked, he means every bit of it. He carries blame heavy for even the small things, the ones he never acted part of, but hanging back when he could have done something here... It would be beyond forgiveness.

He rolls his shoulders, not really a shrug. "I'll do my best. I've led before, and I've gone through stuff as much as I can with my team. They know their jobs, I know their jobs, and I'm not leaving without any of them."

"Pride," He concludes. But then after a pause... "PERHAPS A LITTLE MOTHERFUCKING SOMETHING MORE THAN."

He gives Karkat a curious look over. He mistook the young Vantas once for the Signless. Every single time after has him being his own motherfucker, the one what got up under his skin in a whole different sort of way than what Signless had, even if neither of them was being fun. A pest and salt in wounds, instead of a motherfucking curse.

Both those dark veils have lifted, but he still never got to considering sameness of them. You think I would be able to live with myself if I didn't do anything for this place? Maybe there was a little more inherited there than blood after all.

"Well the-fuck-enough. GOOD, EVEN. See to it you motherfucking don't then, Vantas." That was the goal more than anything. To keep as much of them as they could.

Standards, personal decency, devotion to those near to him, and more than a few issues of self worth. He has to earn the right to that happiness, maybe. But now's not the time for going into it, and the Initiate's not the one needing to know the details.

Instead, he answers with a solid nod.

"I'm going to go check on them one last time, before we go. Make sure everything's in order, maybe give a speech of my own." He looks back. "I'll see you after this," he says like a promise, then he turns to go find his team.
