Setting cornflakes on fire

Who| Jet Link and Sam Wilson
What| Burning down the Tribute Tower cooking
Where| The lower kitchens
When| After the mini-arena
Warnings/Notes| An extreme inability to cook, dorks in the kitchen, will update as necessary

Jet was on a mission, a mission that involved one Sam Wilson. He'd messaged the other man before he'd gone to bed that morning to tell him they should meet in the lower kitchens. Jet liked those better, there were almost never any other tributes and never any capitolites at all, just the chef hired to make the tribute's food and the avoxes to deliver it. But, as Peeta had demonstrated shortly after Jet had arrived in Panem, some of the kitchen areas were empty of people, fully stocked with goods and open for anyone to use. One of these kitchens was what Jet directed Sam to.

As he sat at one of the counter barstools and waited, he wondered if maybe he should just save face and cancel the whole idea, maybe cover up by asking Sam out for drinks instead...but then he wouldn't be able to see his idea through and make something nice for Albert to enjoy after all the crap with the mini-arena and Jet being a pain while re-learning how to use his new cybernetics. Cybernetics he had mostly covered with his pants and long-sleeves, although the backs of the shoulders were open to reveal the metal beneath and, of course, his hands were still visible. But at least he could use them now, he'd need them for this.

Jet played with a bottle of vinegar and a spoon as he waited, practicing his finer motor skills by making the spoon balance on top of the bottle. Hopefully Sam would be along before the second thoughts took over.

Sam's only really been to the kitchens on the lower levels during his first few days here, when he was exploring every place he was allowed to go in the tower, but he still finds the place Jet'd wanted him to meet easily enough.

Honestly, he has no idea what the guy wants. It's not a blind spot, as far as Sam knows, but the only other reason he can think of for meeting in a kitchen involves cooking or eating. Which might well be an option, he's not counting it out.

When he spots Jet waiting in the kitchen, he greets him with a smile. "Hey, man. How you been, how's married life treating you? Getting used to things okay?" He isn't going to ask directly about the new cybernetics. He'd seen their post about it, a few days after it happened, and it was clear enough what they thought of it, and what they were supposed to think of it.

But he can kind of ask without asking.

He nods at Jet’s response to his question, smiling back. “Good to hear.” And it definitely is - if he was really having a bad enough time with things, Sam assumes that Jet’d find some way to clue him into that. He’ll take that answer as a sign that things are as good as they can be, under the circumstances.

Then he leans in a little, resting one elbow and a hip against the counter so he can give Jet his full attention while trying not to make the guy feel like he’s being scrutinized. Sam’s admittedly a little worried at first, about what kind of huge, personal favor he might have to ask, but a smile starts tugging at his lips when Jet’s rambled enough that Sam kind of gets the picture.

“Nah, man, you sound like someone who wants to learn a valuable skill and make someone he loves happy, with a bonus of maybe cutting off some of those jokes. Nothing stupid about that.” And the meeting in the kitchen makes a lot more sense, now. “Course I’ll show you how to make some stuff, what kind of friend would I be if I let you keep terrorizing microwaves?”

Yeah, he can’t help but notice that, but he doesn’t say anything. He’s not out to embarrass the guy, here. Well, not any more than he already is.

“I’m sure the microwaves have learned their lesson, now. Let’s see if we can’t get you guys to get along.” But still, he might stay away from the microwaves for their first time. In this case, a stove might actually be a better idea.

Sam grins, shaking his head. “Nah, man, something you’re gonna learn about me - I don’t give up. And what’s first depends on you - what kind of stuff do you and Albert like to eat?”

It did make it sound like that, a little, but he smiles at the explanation. “You don’t have to worry about that - the closest I come to cooking Chinese is throwing leftover vegetables and meat together and calling it a stir fry.” He stands by his red pepper garlic sauce, but not something he’d try to teach as Chinese food.

And then he chuckles a little. “Potatoes, huh? Now that, I can handle. There’s more ways to cook them - and some of them a hell of a lot tastier than scalloped, no offense to Albert - but we can start there.”
