The Crowning Of Clara Murphy

Who| Everyone.
What| The Crowning of Clara Murphy
Where| A refurbished former-medical building within Capitol.
When| Starting from late afternoon, going into the evening and late night.
Warnings/Notes| Don't forget, peacekeepers are on high alert and will notice any rebellious activity or odd behaviour.

The theme of the ceremony is corruption and dystopia, with a distinct nod to futuristic aspects and, of course, robots. The room is stark, clean, and foreboding, all done in metallics, crisp whites, and the occasional bit of robotics set up as art. It speaks as an unholy cross between a medical office, a military base, and an extremely well kept prison.

The ceremony is both a chance for Capitolites to have fun and be grateful for the grand and glorious Panem which in no way exemplifies any attributes of dystopia, while also working as a not so subtle reminder to the troublemakers out there of what can happen when things get out of line. Which they surely won't, with all the peacekeepers around.

Tributes are dressed in all manner of thing incorporating chains, rope, caution tape, muzzles, bars and cages, prison stripes, and uniform orange-- all things reminiscent of imprisonment and restriction. Some tributes may be made to look scuffed up, like cartoon-ish depictions of hardened thugs. There are a few references to robotics, and that of evil and corrupt military men and police officers, but all tributes will be marked by some manner of cuff or chain that clearly denotes them as “criminals”.

They’ll also be given a “prison number” that is actually indicative of their district association and an arbitrary letter next to it, for example, someone from district six will have 06 and the first letter of their name. It will be temporarily tattooed somewhere visible on their skin. It can be washed off but it will take more scrubbing than would be done in a single day, let alone a crowning.

The only exceptions to these rules, are those who have been brought to the winner’s table; all those who can be deemed as cyborgs, scientists, and of course, the victor herself. Her throne sits at the head of the table, a robotic contraption that appears almost as though it might encase her. For a crown, Clara has been given one that seems to bear resemblance to a white picket fence, which, when made into a crown, looks far sharper than the idyllic home setting it’s meant to represent.

Avoxes are all dressed as members of the corrupt Detroit military police. The uniforms are naturally given a more sinister edge. None of them are comfortable. All of them are serving “Detriotto” staple foods.

Around the crowning, flat hologram projections of hockey games can be seen. They show the games of a team called “The Rouge Wings” and alternate that with the less spectacular showings of what appears to be a young boy’s hockey team. Commercials fill the times between promoting the work of Capitol’s peacekeepers, showing appreciation for them on an individual level, encouraging obedience in citizens with pleasant clips of peacekeepers speaking to children, and suggesting recruitment in the truly good and noble of Panem. Capitolites may nod along to these as they giggle at the sight of decorative signs, that are most certainly from Clara’s lesser world, about obeying, consuming, and so on, to a less than favourable government. A few posters feature Clara Murphy’s face in four colour palettes, all humorous jabs at dystopia proclaiming; “MOTHER MURPHY IS WATCHING YOU”.

But hockey games are not the only things that can be seen on the projection screens; if tributes take the time to look, they may see their own face projected above in profile and facing forward views like that of mug shots. Though, how the capitol has managed to get these pictures may be entirely a mystery. Besides these mugshots, criminal records are displayed, listing crimes from “lied to their parents” to petty theft to murder. Whether these records are true or not may be up for much debate.

In the mean time, there are plenty of things for party go-ers to do, such as take part in the David For A Day egg and spoon race, in which tributes will all have a chance to dress up (with wigs and matching clothing of all sizes!) as the mysterious David, compete against others, and should they win, be dubbed David For A Day, winning themselves a banner they can wear and a spot at the victor table.

There is also an obstacle course available dubbed the "Clarence Boddicker Memorial Prison Funhouse" designed to look, you guessed it, like a prison. Fun for all ages and demeanours!

For those looking for retreat, there’s a small section cut away from it all, designed to be a pleasant backyard patio setting opened to a starry night sky and small surrounding garden, in stark contrast to the rest of the place. There’s a small area for dancing in, that can really only accommodate one couple at a time, but is nevertheless perfect for a romantic scene. Only two songs play over speakers here, one perfectly fitting, the other a little more jarring. It’s also here that party go-ers can get their picture taken with a life sized ED-209. Many more much smaller ED-209’s can be seen around and within the crowning party. As well as the occasional roomba, which fans of the last arena will surely get a chuckle out of.

As the crowning nears it’s end, those at the victor’s table will be given paintball guns filled up with red paint. They will be ordered to bring the criminals to justice! The criminals being all the other tributes. Those hit with paint will be made to wait within the Memorial Prison Funhouse until all the criminals are apprehended and forced to do their time! No one will be allowed to go back to the tribute tower until all the criminals are caught.

Terezi lifts a brow at the apology, but reaches out to shake her hand. If Clara expects her to flinch from her, she'll have another thing coming.

"What, the yelling or the limb loss? I was pretty used to both of those things--even before I got here." That probably says more about the world that she came from than Terezi herself, though. Or maybe it just said something about her friends. They were kind of weird.

"I am not at all surprised that you are feeling overwhelmed. It's hard being a celebrity." Not that they weren't all celebrities, but those few weeks after being a Victor had to be tougher than most.

seestheman: (Well this is new)

Clara can't help but raise an eyebrow at that. "The yelling, I can't really help the limb loss." It's weird being so blunt about it, but if this girl's going to be, she doesn't see a reason not to do the same.

"I'm not a celebrity." Okay, that's a straight up lie, but she doesn't feel like one. Celebrities are supposed to be glamorous and right now she feels anything but. "Well...you know what I mean." She shrugs and hums slightly, trying to figure out what to say. "I'm sorry, this is awful of me, but I don't think I even know your name." She thinks it begins with a T from what she's seen and heard during various highlight reels, but she can't remember.

"Terezi Pyrope," the troll girl supplies helpfully. She taps the tattoo on her bare shoulder that reads 03T. "District Three. And you are Clara Murphy! Victor of District Ten, who is always watching us, and apparently has a thing for robots and prisons and somebody named David."

She lifts a single brow at that last item, not simply because it's a weird thing to note, but also because she happens to know a Dave. Which is sort of like knowing a David.
seestheman: (And that's terrible)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-11-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's nice to meet you, Terezi." She still isn't sure how much she should be offended by the Capitol's wild misunderstanding about her home, but having this girl bring them up definitely makes her laugh. "The only things they're even close to being right on are that I miss my son and maybe the part with robots, though really, it's only one. And even then, he isn't exactly a robot, he's a person." That probably doesn't help her case much.

"Though, if we're going off the Capitol's supposed facts about me, you left out the part where I'm apparently adopting all the younger Tributes with my no-longer-secret lesbian lover after adopting all of them with my husband." Forgive her snark, it's either that or she starts saying inflammatory things about the Capitol and gets carted away to a jail cell or worse.

"I think your no-longer-secret lesbian lover would have some minor qualms about adopting me. So I will remain adoption-less to avoid causing any emotional upsets in your tabloid relationship."

Actually, truth be told, Terezi is not entirely sure that Rose still has a grudge against her. Maybe not, after their time spent being dirty terrible jailhouse rebels together. There's something about torture that brings people together in the strangest ways.

But she doesn't really want to dwell on that. She is still far more interested in the other stuff. "You mentioned your son... Is that the David?"
seestheman: (It's just relief)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-11-28 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"You mean you don't want to be caught up in our bizarre, dysfunctional little family and only add fuel to the drama?" Clara can't help but be on the verge of grinning as she tries not to laugh. "I'm so shocked."

Her smile dissipates a bit as she lets out a small sigh. She isn't surprised that Terezi, or anyone really, is going to ask about him, but it doesn't change the fact that it hurts a little bit. "Yes, David's my son." She briefly wonders if there's a way she can say this without sounding like some sort of space racist. "Are you related to any of the other Trolls here? Not that I think you all look alike or anything, but...I've noticed that they sometimes tend to bring people who know each other."

Terezi unfortunately misses her chance to decry Clara as a space racist. It would have been a wonderful moment to heckle her about, but rather Terezi is too busy thinking too hard about the question. It's a true tragedy.

"They did. They brought my ancestor here, but she died a while ago, and they didn't bring her back." It's better to be blunt about these things, right? Being blunt and informal means that it's not as personal and it doesn't hurt as much. It means she doesn't miss her as much.
seestheman: (With every breath that I am worth)

[personal profile] seestheman 2014-12-17 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe some other time. Surely the opportunity will come up again, even if Clara tries to keep it from happening.

No matter how blunt Terezi is about it, Clara can't help but feel guilty for prodding at something like that. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." She isn't even sure how to finish that sentence. "At least that means she at home instead of here?" Though, from what the Initiate told her about their homeworld, that may not necessarily be a good thing.

"I would have rather she stayed here," Terezi responds, not taking notice of the awkwardness that Clara responds to her explanation with. There are a lot of humans that was awkward about a lot of things, and it gets pretty tiring trying to keep up with their social missteps. In this case, she's only saying as much as she can without getting anyone into trouble.

"She dies back on our planet. Murdered by a pirate that she was sent to apprehend, actually." She tries hard not to take inventory of the woman's outfit, either. The Capitol has a funny sense of humor, but at least this probably wasn't intentional.
seestheman: (What did you say?)

[personal profile] seestheman 2015-01-07 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Clara can respect bluntness. In fact, it's kind of refreshing after all the shit that's happened over the past year. But despite how refreshing she finds Terezi's bluntness, she can't help but feel like an ass for dredging up what she assumes are terrible memories.

"I'm sorry to hear that," she says quietly, unsure of what else she could possibly say. It's the first time in months that she's really been faced with the reality of what some people will return to if they ever get to go home. Sure, she'd be able to go back to her son (and, from what Dr. Norton's said, her fears of going back to a world without Alex are completely based on the lies she was fed before she came here), but what about the others? Are most of them from places that are somehow worse than Panem? "At least you got a little bit of time with her?" Though, she has a feeling that's not the right thing to say.

Despite Clara's feelings, Terezi does consider that sentiment. At least she got to meet her, to know her in some fashion other than a name in a textbook that she had read a hundred times. A story that she had tried to burn into her mind like the rays of the sun had burned into her eyes.

It doesn't compare to being able to talk with her, or to the things that she's learned about her since being here. She does feel closer to her ancestor, however more painful that makes her disappearance.

"Yeah," she agrees, nodding her head solemnly. "I wouldn't have gotten to meet her otherwise. We don't ever get to meet our genetic predecessors. I hope they bring her back here, but... if they don't, at least I got to know her outside of a history book."

A government-endorsed one, at that.
seestheman: (Drowning in regrets)

[personal profile] seestheman 2015-02-03 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Clara's never heard anyone say they'd wish someone was here. Honestly, Clara wouldn't wish participation in the arenas on her worst enemy, let alone someone she cares about. But at the same time, she can understand it to a point. After all, there was that brief time after she had realized that this wasn't a dream and before she found out that Alex had survived back home where she had seriously started thinking about if being stuck here for the rest of her life was okay if it meant she'd still have him. Back before things had gone from bad to fucking terrible.

"There's a saying where I come from. 'It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all,'" she shrugs slightly, more to herself than anything else. "Sometimes having that hole in your life is worth it because you got to have them for a little while." And she's just going to ignore how much she probably sounds like a grief counselor right now. "It seems like it fits your situation pretty well, that's all."
