Holiday had never been the type of woman to cower and hide. Yet, she did so for an entire week.

The first day after she awoke in her room, she refused to leave the bed and even nearly attacked the Avox who came by to try and clean up the room or bring her food. After being bold enough to peek out of the door and realizing that she was nowhere near Providence anymore, she simply stayed there, lost on what to do. She even tried to make some makeshift weapons, but they would vanish after she inevitably fell asleep. The only news she had on where she was or what she was there for was caught in snippets of apparently common knowledge.

This was some terrible dream that she couldn't wake up from, even while the man's face and the feeling of his boot rattled around in her mind.

It eventually became known that she was getting nowhere doing what she had been, so Holiday decided to finally venture out... or try to, at least.

She opened a small crack in her bedroom door before slipping out...

She looked over the TV in shock, very thankful that it had been covered. "What? Why?"

[gruesome]

He blinked at her, never more than two eyes shut at once. "... They didn't tell you? It's why we're here. It's entertainment. They all watch it like a story-teller."

They told her that she was honored to participate in these games. She thought it was just insane sacrifice ritual or a strange gain for power among those who weren't natives.

But... she didn't think this. She just stared at her informant with wide eyes for a moment. "That's... sick... What's the point of it all?"

[gruesome]

"So they don't have to compete." He could tell he was scaring her, and tried to soften his voice. "That's what I heard. Before they started bringing us here, it was their children."

[doc_holi]

... What? Their children?

"That... doesn't make sense. Why would they ever-? They have all this technology and they-?"

This couldn't be the truth. Perhaps she was being fooled by the stranger. That had to be it.

[gruesome]

He shrugged. "I don't know, I don't. It doesn't make sense with me either."

[doc_holi]

"That can't be right," she voiced her reasoning. Anything that cruel and insane couldn't be true, could it? Why would they do such a thing?

Still, she couldn't just dismiss this story as myth. What if it was true?

[gruesome]

"I do not like these people. Do you know there's a man out there selling- selling these little devices just so people can watch the Games better?"

[doc_holi]

She blinked at him again, more worried now than anything.

"They enjoy this? I don't understand how anyone could enjoy watching others die like this... I-"

Wait. They saw her? They all watched her die with enjoyment? Did they cheer for her killer? Did any even feel badly for her? She gives a shudder, suddenly incredibly uneasy.

Yay, mutual outrage?

[gruesome]

"I don't know. I don't understand them. The man thought we should be proud, that the people who win should be proud and would want to watch the fights. I- how can they think like that?"

"The man?" Was he referring to the common metaphor or is there a figure head to this madness?

[gruesome]

"The man who was selling the devices. Barons, I think? A name like that."

[doc_holi]

"... There's no pride in this. It's wrong."

[gruesome]

"I told him that. He thought I was funny."

[doc_holi]

"Has no one done anything about this?"

[gruesome]

"Who would? It is their leaders doing this. Their president who crowns whichever one of us wins."

[doc_holi]

"But what about the survivors? Us tributes? The people who watched their children die? I don't understand why nothing's been done."

It was dangerous to talk like this here, but she didn't know that. If she did, she wouldn't care.

[gruesome]

"The few of us? There's a nation out there," he said with an abrupt gesture out the nearest window. "H-hundreds of thousands of humans, if they aren't lying to me, and they all want this."

[doc_holi]

Holiday looked away, the anger draining away. "There must be something to fight this..."

She didn't want to give up and let them. She'd rather die fighting. But... wasn't like there was much ways to do that.

"I am not a fighter," Some admitted. "The idea is as frightening as the arenas. I had hoped that the winners could do something, but- but we have seen some of them be destroyed, too."

"What? Why? What have they done?"

"One was executed in front of us all for killing a Citizen, at a party. And two have been- have you seen the servants here? The silent ones?"

[doc_holi]

"Yes." She didn't like where this was going.

[gruesome]

"They made them into those. I don't know why. But they made sure we all saw them."

Okay. Enough of this.

"How do we get home?" If it were a matter of winning, the odds were still so against her. But... it wasn't?
