I've Got the Darkness, Baby [Open]
Who| Eva, open
What| The 9th District Mentor hits the town.
Where| Throughout the Capitol
When| After the most recent death announcements
Warnings| Baron Bartlett in one of the subthreads, and everything he entails.
Only one Tribute down from her District: the blonde man, she hasn't met him yet. Some Mentors would take this as a positive sign, but Eva finds it hard to feel very enthused by this. At the very best, she's still going to lose two more before this awful Arena's over.
She'd like to throttle whomever decided that a giant ice rink was a good idea. Back in her day, they were in a canyon. The resources were, of course, at the bottom, which only encouraged the people who took higher ground - like her - to pick people off faster. An entertainingly bloody bonanza of falling bodies and flying arrows, and most importantly, it was quick.
To get away from the images of people huddled up in indistinguishable, shivering balls, Eva goes out for the evening. If anyone asks, she'll claim boredom with the proceedings. She visits a the Training Center, then a restaurant and the performing arts district. All the while she taps her lower lip thoughtfully, as if considering something complex and far-off that requires some metronomic habit to keep straight.
[OOC: Come meet her at one of the subthreads below or just run into her in the street.]

Re: Training Center
She stands up, puts the rest of her roll down on the table, and shakes, looking him over. He's so much older than the tributes were when she played, but that's typical here - one of the benefits of the conversion to using foreigners is that they no longer use children. It's only nauseatingly abominable now, instead of soul-chillingly.
"I'm your Mentor. I'm sorry I haven't been around. I'd like to say it was for a good reason and I've netted you plenty of Sponsors, but that would be dishonest. I've simply been out of commission."
She bites the tip of your tongue. "They must have stacked the deck pretty hard against you, that a strong young man like yourself only lasted this long."
Re: Training Center
"Gotta say, wasn't expecting more magic. Those little girls really pack a punch." Hell, she killed Bruce. He didn't even think that was possible... the Hulk is impossible to even dent, even by magic or what have you. "Are you going to advise me on how to play better, ma'am?"
He'll have to cut that conversation short.
Re: Training Center
"Not necessarily. Since it seems like your survival is pretty guaranteed these days, I don't like to think of it so much as about winning as about navigating the aftermath." She sits back down and picks at her lips with her fingernails, then stops and tears more bits off the bread again. "You weren't drop straight in, were you?"
Re: Training Center
"But what do you mean, navigating the aftermath?" Isn't this the aftermath?
Re: Training Center
It's not a matter of keeping them happy for their sake, but Eva's invested in keeping her Tributes out of too much trouble. Besides, she'll want to divert any Sponsors who want to put a bid on a strapping young blond lad.
"People are going to want things from you, and it's my job to make sure they don't get much more than what you're willing to give." She pats the seat next to her. "You can sit down. I don't bite."
Re: Training Center
"Don't they already get what they want from me for the games? I can't lie to anyone... I don't enjoy the situation. I don't see how anyone could." He can't bring himself to do any of the schmoozing. But he doesn't know exactly what she means what they want out of him... more than what he's willing to give? He's already unwilling to give himself up for these stupid games.
Re: Training Center
She runs a hand through her hair. Secretly, she does this because she suspects they slip cameras into her locks, little robots the size of dandruff. These suspicions have never been confirmed, but she has them anyway.
"You'll spend half your time here and half your time in the arena. And they'll make demands of you here, and you need to be careful about saying no, because...people here don't like to be told no. Part of what I do is keep them from making those demands in the first place." She knows that's frustratingly vague, but it's taboo to talk about much of what goes on behind the scenes. "As far as anyone's concerned, the Capitol owns you, body and soul. It's not like a job where you go in, do your arena and go home at the end."
Re: Training Center
"What's your plan?" he asks, assuming she has one detailed and laid out. He'll take her advice. She seems like she knows what she's doing.
Re: Training Center
She's being facetious, but there's an undercurrent of violence there. She is willing to go further than is appropriate to protect her Tributes.
"Think of it as a marketer who doesn't really want to sell her product. Not that you're products, obviously, but that's how they think of you here."
Re: Training Center
"What started these games?" he asks, kind of out of the blue, but he figures she might know.
Re: Training Center
Re: Training Center
It's sick, and it's not a solution. He's heard stories, about how people outside the capitol live. He tries not to think "this could be worse" anymore.
Re: Training Center
She wrings one hand through the other.

He comes back with two glasses, remembering that his metabolism has gone back to normal again.

Granted, they ruined it by taking him away. But Eva can't say that out loud or show that she misses a traitor to the cause.

So she takes another drink and thanks him for it. "So, Steve, tell me about yourself, aside from your upstanding moral values."
