Suspects' Holding Cell
The vans drive for what seems like an hour before they come to a stop, and Peacekeepers blindfold and forcefully drag even the most cooperative suspects into a building.
The suspects are all held in one cell, a large, metal room with a thick door and a single ledge that serves as a bench. Bright fluorescent lights beam from overhead. There are no windows and no clocks, no sign of where they might be.
The Peacekeepers take off the blindfolds, though without much care for whether they come off all the way or chafe or stay slung around the suspects' necks. The suspects' hands are left cuffed behind their backs, and even the most ingenious of them won't be able to pick the lock on their restraints, but they're otherwise left to roam freely through the space.
Suspects are removed, one at a time, at unpredictable intervals, by Peacekeepers armed with tasers. Some take three hours to return, while others are back within only a minute. Each of them comes back having been clearly roughed up and pressed for information that they may or may not hold; some are bleeding or sporting the beginnings of black eyes.
They'll be sleeping here tonight.

"If you hadn't," he says, "as soon as I figured out what was going on, I would have told you to leave. But watching each other's backs is something we can do, right?"
no subject
"Maybe you can, but I'm blind. I'm not going to be watching anything." It not her usual snark and vigor, but it's still kind of funny. It makes the whole thing seem a little less heavy on her shoulders. And if she can laugh at it, she can live with it.

"I didn't realize you'd turn down an alliance over a technicality," he deadpans.

"I didn't know my ally was so rude," she retorts, still without her usual oomph, but better. She makes the effort to push herself into a more upright position, or at least enough of one that she can tuck her head carefully against Carlos's side, minding her horns. "But I'll forgive you this time."

Carlos's eyebrows draw up, his mouth opens -- and then it closes. Scientifically speaking, he's touched. He's figuratively touched, too.
He can't even shoot back a witty retort.
"Okay." It's unclear if this is in response to her magnanimous forgiveness or her gesture of physical affection. Perhaps both. Carlos wishes he could put a hand on her shoulder, but leaning into her, just slightly, would have to do. Getting comfortable is physically impossible, but this isn't so bad. He'll hold still as long as he can.
