I wasn't there to take his place. I was ten thousand miles away.
Who| Katniss and Gale
What| Getting some time alone to talk sincerely.
Where| The little piece of park Katniss has adopted.
When| Back during the family plot.
Warnings/Notes| None.
She both wanted to talk to Gale intensely, and wanted to avoid him at all costs.
But she knew she needed too. For multiple reasons.
Waiting outside the fake arena she set up, she tried not to think about this whole thing, and how screwed up it was. Luckily, it was causing so much publicity that it was easier for those who were looking to to slip away. And Katniss had taken that little corner of park that was close to the woods, though no where near close enough. Beggars couldn't be choosers.
She had considered trying to get into the actual mountains with Gale, but she didn't want to even think about what kind of attention that would have gotten.

Gale wasn't going to play along. He had never made nice in front of the cameras, and he'd be damned if he started now. When he spotted Katniss, it only went a little way towards getting the glower off his face.
"So," he said. "That's what an Arena is like, huh? Doesn't look so bad to me." The sarcasm dripped from every word. "Hard to believe that that is what's held Panem together for seventy-five years."

"Yeah, sorry you didn't volunteer years ago now, aren't you?"
The jokes were dark, but at least she knew he understood that. He wasn't going to take anything she said at face value like so many Capitol citizens would.
"Come on, I want to show you around."
She started towards the park, not too fast, not wanting to catch anyone's attention.
