When Susannah stumbles out of the elevator, she immediately sees Carlos (and his mighty fine hair) doing something... well, science-y, she must presume, on the kitchen table. In a way she's grateful, because the science equipment will hopefully serve as a visual reminder that she's not in D6, that she's... not safe, there's no place safe in the Tribute Tower, but there are places that are less unsafe.

Being here, for instance, is less unsafe than back in D6 where the Peacekeeper had dragged off one of her friends, presumably to where she'd never to see him again.

Susannah means to go to her room, to hold herself and just hope that something will make her think of something else, anywhere else, than her ordeal in that late July holding cell and her morbid conviction that she'll find Guy's or Bunny skeleton in a damn somewhere. So of course she ends up at the kitchen table instead.

"Mmm, but would they be 'metric fatality units' overseas?" Is she teasing a bit? Maybe. Better to concentrate on being witty at Carlos than to think about what's happening to Guy.

He breaks into a laugh. It feels good to laugh; it's something Carlos hasn't done enough of lately. "I can't worry about that until I've set the actual units. Maybe I'll work out a metric system later, if I feel it's not complicated enough."

She smiles at him. Making him laugh does make her feel better. "I thought the point of the metric system was to make things less complicated. That's what my seventh-grade math teacher told us."

"You know, if I'm inventing a system to measure danger," Carlos says, "you would think I could set a universal, international unit that we can all agree on."

"So metric fatality units, then," she teases, hoping she won't have to bring out a higher level of math or science knowledge because anything past this is Detta's territory. (She wonders what it says about her that she's deeded all higher math to the living repository of all her negative qualities.)

[youbarium]

"I suppose." He jerks his head at the hall that leads to the Tributes' rooms, still smiling. "You should get some rest, Susannah. It's late."

She nods. "I will. Thanks, Carlos." Thanks to him, she might actually be able to get to sleep tonight.
