earthborn: (these tactics by which I conquer)

On Any Other Day

Who| Shepard And Her Adoring Fans
What| The Customer Complaints Desk Is [OPEN]
Where| A lovely little park outside a lovely little café on a quiet day when the sun is shining, just after a certain network post
When| The morning after Shepard's Exposé goes live.
Warnings/Notes| Talk of murder, genocide, cussing, and political discourse. God help us all.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, she's got a rail-thin barrista with a shock of violet-pink hair, and he keeps bringing her coffee from all the way across the street. On any other day, she'd call it perfect— he keeps sarcastically saluting her and she keeps sarcastically thanking him as 'private', and the coffee is damn good in addition to cheap and hand-delivered. On any other day.

But despite the shining weather and the convenient caffeine-drip, she's not set up here with the empty chair beside her own for the sake of simple joys.

Come at me, bro.

Sandy appeared as she usually did, suddenly and surprised as if she hadn't expected to find Shephard where she was. The scrawny girl came out of the cafe looking for the commander after having searched the inside for her.

"Oh...hey."

Shuffling over she waited for permission to take her seat. Part of her wondered if she should be nervous around someone so capable. But that part was smothered by the part of her that had learned how to throw a punch from Shephard.

"Talk shop?" It was an antiquated phrase in her own time.

"Actually I wanted to thank you for helping me. It...feels good to punch stuff." She admitted sounding a little embarrassed. Since she had learned how to punch properly she was punching things every day in the training room trying to teach her knuckles how to do it without hurting.

The stupid story could wait, credit was deserved first.

She nodded in agreement, not in the mood to lie to herself about her chances in the next arena being much better then they were last time.

"If it helps, I punched The Tall Clown Troll in his face." She commented with a bit more pride. "He was trying to teach me to fight angry I think." At least that's what she had taken away from the aggressive lesson.

Between training with Katniss, Pruna, and now Shepard regularly she would be a busy girl. But it beat laying around thinking about the nature of death. What kid her age did that?

"You ever plan on winning one of these arenas for yourself? Or are you just gonna help the rest of us like the turtle guy?"
justoutrunyou: (score!)

Sandy smiled and despite the weight of their situation it held an air of childhood to it still "I think most the people around here already think you're kind of insane."

Then again who wasn't these days? Insanity was pretty popular.

"Was it like that back home too?" Bringing things back around to the video, if even half of that was true Sandy could already imagine Shepard wasn't the most popular ginger in the galaxy.
justoutrunyou: (I'm a little bitch)

Sandy listened and sorted through the words as best she could. It made sense the way Shepard spoke about it. Her father had always said Spider-man wasn't the most popular hero in the news. Sandy had had even met the man responsible for demonizing the masked hero on TV.

"Well...I like you. You're strong, and smart, and you do what you think is right." At least that had been Sandy's perception of the woman.

"You're not nice unless you want to be." She continued "Not...fake I guess."

And finding someone who wasn't fake in the Capitol was getting harder and harder even among the tributes.

Her face burned from the compliment and she looked away sheepishly.

"Aw I'm not that great. But whatever I am, I'm on your side." She nodded and dared to look back.

Another thought crossed her mind and she decided now was as good a time as ever to ask.

"Why did you join the military?"
justoutrunyou: (I am listless)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-04-27 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
That sounded achingly familiar. Her father and taken to a life of crime for the same reason if his stories were to be believed.

Still to have found a hidden talent such as fighting and killing in such a way, it was mind boggling.

"So what...they send you out on missions, you do a good job and they keep bumping you up ranks until you're the boss of a space ship and a crew?"
justoutrunyou: (pondering)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-04-28 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well you're still standing." Sandy observed "And people like you and listen to you."

At least the people Sandy had seen.

"So, you do everything you do because it needs to be done." Trying to wrap her head around complex ideas was nothing new to Sandy. It came from being a clever girl without enough proper schooling to beat down her imagination.

"For peace? Is that even a thing that can happen in a universe so big?"
justoutrunyou: (You're kidding)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-04-28 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Something about that seemed so cool that Sandy couldn't help but smile.

"Then your universe will definitely have peace sooner or later, at least for a little bit with you driving them to it."

She was not however fully prepared to make the same hopeful statement about this place.

"So how do you get people here to respect you? The Capitol people...they're just so into all of this. It's their lives."
justoutrunyou: (headscratcher)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-04-28 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sandy let the words wash over her and wondered just how bad things would have to be before they had the majority on their side. In the end that meant if the tributes rebelled they'd be the villains in this world.

But the end of Shepard's reasoning had her smiling softly and nodding.

"You're kind of awesome like that."
justoutrunyou: (I could use a hug)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-04-30 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sandy looked surprised by the question, "Well...not really?"

It came out as a question because she hadn't considered that she had anything to worry about. And that in itself surprised her. She thought about it a moment more.

"The last arena, I thought I met someone really cool. Then she used me to piss off my best friend enough that they would attack her. She killed Pruna all to try and teach me a lesson and get me to actually fight back." Even talking about it now made her stomach knot up.

"I thought it would be hard to trust anyone after that...but I trust you." She decided.
justoutrunyou: (I don't care)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-05-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
She nodded with understanding already stacking up her allies in her head.

"I have a few...and I wouldn't betray them. You're on that list." She promised though she couldn't imagine how her betrayal could do much to hurt Shephard. Maybe slow her down but hurt?

"Even Mindy isn't a bad person...she just was so full of herself. Like she's the only one who knows what's right. It's not that easy. I know that now."

Right and wrong weren't exactly so clear in this world.

"I'd be easier if we could all just work together. Even the worst humans can pull together and be decent when there's something bigger and badder to fight against...right?"

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2014-05-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sandy nodded gently feeling a bit of guilt for still being upset with Mindy when she had tried so hard to lay things to rest.

"We gotta do what we gotta do right?" She thought out loud. It wasn't a matter of what Sandy wanted, or even so much what she needed. It was what would be required for her to keep going.

"I've been ripped apart, dragged around a mangled leg for a month, eaten three times, and blown up. I even had some kind of monster burst out of my chest. If I can handle some hurt feelings after all of that maybe I'm doing it wrong."
