Thicker Than Blood Start

For Tributes with keen eyes, they'll notice that Peacekeeper presence seems increased and yet infinitely more ineffective in the last few weeks. Peacekeepers seem harried, as do the Stylists, and most of the Escorts titter and plot without alerting the Tributes as to what, exactly, is so exciting. They simply say that this weekend they'll know.

And so it happens that on the weekend in question, the Tributes are woken by their Escorts early and brought to a restaurant for a hearty breakfast. The restaurant is nothing spectacular, although they seem to be trying to make an impression on the television cameras that float around. The sleepy, cranky meal goes by and then the Tributes are led back to their Suites for a mandatory meeting.

Sitting on couches and the floor, in chairs and on windowsills, standing off to the side - people from the Tributes' homes are waiting to greet them in each District Suite. Some are confused, some accepting, some frightened and some elated to see their beloved. Either way, it should be an eventful reunion.

"Maybe they thought you hadn't been talking to your family enough," said Gale, in a tone that was only making a token effort at casual. "Thought they should step in, before you really did forget about us."

"Oh, don't be silly Gale, you know I could never forget you guys."

Her smile was all teeth, and something the Capitol always read as Katniss good cheer. Since the Capitol seemed to think good cheer was something Katniss had a lot to spread around.

But Gale would know what lay under that.

"But now we'll have plenty of time to catch up!"

He did know. Gale knew Katniss, maybe better than anyone else -- certainly better than the bloated idiots in the Capitol did. It mollified him, seeing how fake the smile was, and as his anger seeped away, concern began to replace it. If she hadn't been able to contact them -- what had been happening to her in the Capitol?

She would see some of the tension leave his jaw, leave his frame, and the arm that Gale slung around her shoulder was warm. Warm and protective, as though he could shield her from the cameras and the Capitol alike.

"Yeah," he said, not giving the cameras so much as a glance. "You'll have to tell me all about it, Catnip." Gale's voice dropped to barely above a whisper. "I want to hear everything."
