It had taken longer than Karkat thought to extricate himself from the discussions Hans had started, even with Bert implying those things he had about Nepeta. But he'd managed to pull himself away from everything in the end and now he was on his way up to D4 to make sure everything was all right and nobody had been infested with anybody's young.

"Yeah," Karkat says. "Oh hey, I've been meaning to ask, have you tried teaching yourself how to read Human yet? Me and Signless have, but I think Terezi already knew from being from the future and hanging out with humans. Bert hasn't, even though its his species' language, but evidently they use different letters wherever the fuck Gilead is."

Another stunning conversational gambit. He can totally keep this up.

"I already know some," Nepeta answers. "Meowstly from talking to them a little before coming here, but I suppawse I could be spending more time on it?"

But she knows all she really needs to know to tell what most of things she's seen written mean, and that's good enough for her. Especially when there's not much that tends to be any sort of complex writing in the Arenas themselves.

Karkat shrugs. "There's some okay books here, but it's totally your fucking choice if you want to or not."

Fuck, he feels to awkward doing this, like a complete fucking tool. He keeps wanting to tell her sorry that he couldn't keep her alive on the meteor but no, fuck, that's the worst thing to say.

"I suppawse I can keep it in mind," she answers with a shrug of her own.

Whether or not it's a good idea to let Nepeta loose on the whole of human literature is another question entirely, but she supposes it would be something to do when she isn't doing something else. Still, she doesn't say anything else, for all that she's got a general idea of the fact that Karkat has something on his mind. Not enough to know what it is, but being a Heart player is good for a few things, at the very least.

Finally he can't help it. He just blurts it out: "I'm from the future too now. I-- I went back after the last time I died and they pulled me back here half-a-sweep later and-- and I get why Terezi didn't want to talk about it. It wasn't a happy future. And... and I'm sorry for everything I fucked up with that hasn't happened to you yet."

I'm sorry I sent you and Equius to your deaths.

Nepeta's only seen bits and pieces of the future that Karkat has, and already she can agree. True, she isn't yet aware of the fact that Equius will die, much less her own actions following it, but she knows. She says nothing of though. Instead, she blinks and then offers a smile (which might have been a laugh, if not for the topic of conversation).

"You don't need to apawlogize fur that. Not unless you really want to."

"I do," Karkat says, much more quietly than Nepeta might have been used to. "I fucked up really badly."

It's the quietness of his comment that really gets Nepeta to consider the answer. She's used to his constant bluster and yelling, and this... this is something new enough that it probably really is worth a moment of consideration.

"Alright, then. Apawlogy accepted, but I still don't think you needed to."
