The Crowning of Mindy McReady
Who| Everyone who's anyone.
What| The Crowning.
Where| A warehouse on the edge of town.
When| Starting from early evening till late into the night.
Warnings/Notes| Be sure to check the linked thread for plot purposes, even if you don't tag into it.
The party is brightly colored.
The theme, subtly, is super heroes. Boldly paints city scapes are splattered across the walls, and hallways are made to look like dingy, potentially crime ridden alleys. From the upper walkways of the warehouse, party goers can get hooked into harnesses and swing out over the dance floor. Above them, tributes and VIPS can find themselves on a clear plastic dance floor levitated above everything, looking like they're hanging in air.
Masks are passed out in plenty, and capes are easy to find, while brightly colored drinks themed around super powers are plentiful. None of them actually work, but many of the Capitol people are happy to pretend, mocking super strength or invisibility with each new beverage.
Under the dance floor a catacomb of tunnels and rooms full of obstacles is splashed with black light receptive colors. Party goers are given vests and laser guns, marked green for villains and red for heros, and set loose to hunt each other in the laser tags playground. The screens in the dance floor keep a running tally of which side is winning, displaying the players on the screens around the room, along with clips from the arenas.
About half way through the night, everyone is gathered to the main stage for a special announcement.

The voice was happy distraction and he even shot her a mischievous little smile to hide a near grimace from the comment. "Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Literally. What about you? Don't want to cover up that pretty face?"
no subject
"No, I've just been wearing it too long. Taking a breather."
She gestured at their surroundings.
"Welcome to the Capitol pulling out all the stops."

She nodded toward the nearest Peacekeeper.
"Surveillance is less likely to break down, though."
no subject
He heard what she said, but didn't understand it. Had there been a breach last time? In their own minds?
"If surveillance can break down in Inceptionland, it sounds pretty possible anywhere, don't you think?"
no subject
"There was a glitch or something. I think the technique was new...I heard one of my escorts mention it afterward."
Her voice was perfectly nonchalant.
"There's more redundancy here."
no subject
"Neat," was his only comment to that. "Weird how that works out, I guess. Can't beat the old ways. Most of the time. If you have a blunt enough stick." Okay, he needed to stop. "Want a drink? Maybe another dance?"
no subject
"Sure," she answered, giving him a half smile. "Let's dance."
She glanced up at where the cameras might have been, then back at him.
"I'm sure the viewers at home would get excited. Us dancing here, after our encounter in the Arena."

Gabe holds his hand out to her, like an actual gentleman. "M'lady?"
no subject
Maybe he really didn't have any interest in the larger game, in the story or the spectacle.
She gave him a slight, amused smile and took his hand.
no subject
"I keep my word," he mockingly whined, leading them to the dance floor, "most of the time. I can't say that the mood lighting will be the same, though."
no subject
Once they were on the dance floor she turned to face him, grasping one of his hands and settling the other on his shoulder.
no subject
He begins with a step, taking the lead in their song.
no subject
"What you fought for?" she asks, eyebrows raised and smiling slightly. "If you're the Gabriel from tradition, you're in pretty tight with God. Isn't it Lucifer who did the fighting?"
no subject
"We all fought at one point or another. Luci never fought for free will. Just whined, mostly."
Gabriel died for free will, but he doesn't make a point to say that. He also wasn't really tight with God, but he doesn't say that either. He had been thinking recently that some people knew too much and there were too many religious folks running around. What if they found out an archangel was among their slaughters? What if they found out God had abandoned them, too? Hope would vanish, so Gabriel kept a lot of things to himself lately.
Not that he didn't like Joan or her deductive skills. He loved answering the right questions, it was just up to them to find those questions. He wasn't going to really lie, after all.

She pauses for a moment, just dancing, before speaking again.
"You're working with thousands of years of tradition here. The bible, and Dante, and Milton. How much of it is true?"
It wasn't that she necessarily believed the whole angel thing...she was just more likely to get information if she sounded like she believed it.
no subject
To the question, he just shrugged. "Most of it. Fall of Luci. Fall of man. Hell being layered up like a strip mall. Those stories had to come from somewhere, right?"
no subject
She glances away, then back at him.
"What do you think about this place?"
no subject
His mind leaves that subject quickly enough as he shrugs and tries to come up with an answer that's the truth without someone shooting him between the eyes. "The liquor's pretty great," he finally said, "Lots of different kinds of chocolate. Got a nice robe, too, from those race thingys. Got my name on it and everything."
no subject
Very smart.
"It's weird, though, being watched all the time. Although...I don't know. I imagine working for God has that drawback, too. Or, with. Or against."
no subject
no subject
The idea that God was not present didn't phase her a bit.
no subject
He shrugged, once again, like it was no big deal. "I fought Lucifer and Michael. Couple of stuck up, whine bags. Didn't get the chance to raise my hand against Daddy's favorite, but I did against the massive disappointment of the family... And now I'm here. Considering that I told two knuckle heads how to throw his ass back into Hell and lock the door behind him, I'd like to think I helped."
no subject
She wasn't beginning to completely believe all this, necessarily. But even if it weren't true, he certainly believed it, and she was getting more and more interested in the story.
Or so she told herself.

Gabriel reined himself back in from that little sliver of emotion that passed through. Things were just hard to hold up here.
