The Crowning of Mindy McReady

Who| Everyone who's anyone.
What| The Crowning.
Where| A warehouse on the edge of town.
When| Starting from early evening till late into the night.
Warnings/Notes| Be sure to check the linked thread for plot purposes, even if you don't tag into it.

The party is brightly colored.

The theme, subtly, is super heroes. Boldly paints city scapes are splattered across the walls, and hallways are made to look like dingy, potentially crime ridden alleys. From the upper walkways of the warehouse, party goers can get hooked into harnesses and swing out over the dance floor. Above them, tributes and VIPS can find themselves on a clear plastic dance floor levitated above everything, looking like they're hanging in air.

Masks are passed out in plenty, and capes are easy to find, while brightly colored drinks themed around super powers are plentiful. None of them actually work, but many of the Capitol people are happy to pretend, mocking super strength or invisibility with each new beverage.

Under the dance floor a catacomb of tunnels and rooms full of obstacles is splashed with black light receptive colors. Party goers are given vests and laser guns, marked green for villains and red for heros, and set loose to hunt each other in the laser tags playground. The screens in the dance floor keep a running tally of which side is winning, displaying the players on the screens around the room, along with clips from the arenas.

About half way through the night, everyone is gathered to the main stage for a special announcement.

"While I'm sure there are those here who would be happy to see my bits, I can't say I regret having them a bit better concealed."

Bert in general tried not to give the Avoxes too much attention, they deserved better and since he couldn't help them he preferred not to revel in their shame.

"There are better times and places."

Unable to help himself, Wyatt chuckled at that, a pleasant rumbling sound.

"True that. Ain't so much the idea itself, as the company," he agreed.

"I don't doubt you'll be lacking the company dressed like that, sai." He didn't think Wyatt would be lacking for company either way, but he was encouraged that the flattery and light jokes were working.

"If only we could all be so lucky."

"I am lucky," Wyatt nodded, mouth twitching, small, but fond. Warmed, and softened by the thought of Max. "I ain't gunna deny that."

Sobering a bit after a moment, he looked back at Cuthbert.

"But I'm sure ya got some of yer own here that'll afford ya the same, whatever misfortune yer stylist gets ya stuffed into."

"Thankee for the kind words, whether there's truth behind them or not." Bert took most compliments to heart, even when they weren't direct, and sometimes when they weren't even directed at him.

He noticed right away how much Wyatt changed when he was thinking about Maximus, and while that was a thing Bert might normally poke fun at, he instead filed it away for later. There may come a day when he needed that information.

"I'm sure both of us might put up with worse than this just to have a gun at our belts."

Wyatt wasn't ashamed of what he felt for Max. Whatever Bert thought of it: Max was a good man, loyal and true, and Wyatt was never happier than when he was with him.

He could never be ashamed of that.

"'Mong other things," he nodded. "There's a few bits I might be tempted with, had they a mind to ask."

It wasn't about shame, Bert himself had worse inclinations, but more about knowing how he could emotionally manipulate Wyatt in his favor should he cross the wrong line again.

"And just what bits might those be? I'd take a gun over any other thing I could wear. Even without bullets. Hell, I would walk around everywhere stark naked but for the gun at my waist if that meant I could have it back."

"Wasn't speakin' strictly'a clothes, son," Wyatt snorted lightly, bemused. "As nice as it was to see again last arena, there's more to life than a shiny bit'a metal."

Particularly when said bit so often ended life.

Bert swallows his immediate reaction which is to argue that that 'shiny bit of metal' is his life. But he's supposed to be playing nice.

"What bits did you have in mind, then? Our worlds are so similar and yet so different. I would hear what is more important to thee than a good weapon."

"Family," Wyatt replied simply. "Good friends. Love an' a good laugh. A clear sky an' a open horizon. A fast horse, a well-dealt hand..."

He trailed off and turned back to Bert.

"It ain't that I dislike guns, son." He wasn't trying to fight either, he'd promised Max - and Susannah too - that he would try to make peace with the boy. He was just trying to explain his view on the subject. What he'd come to learn, what he appreciated more the older he got. "I've carried one for a good portion of my life an' earned a name for myself for havin' a knack for usin' one, but at the end of the day, for me, it's still jus' a tool. Somethin' to make my job easier,... when it ain't makin' it harder."

His mouth twitched a bit at that. A wry sort of amusement.

"It's a part of me, but it ain't everythin' I am."
