The Crowning of Mindy McReady

Who| Everyone who's anyone.
What| The Crowning.
Where| A warehouse on the edge of town.
When| Starting from early evening till late into the night.
Warnings/Notes| Be sure to check the linked thread for plot purposes, even if you don't tag into it.

The party is brightly colored.

The theme, subtly, is super heroes. Boldly paints city scapes are splattered across the walls, and hallways are made to look like dingy, potentially crime ridden alleys. From the upper walkways of the warehouse, party goers can get hooked into harnesses and swing out over the dance floor. Above them, tributes and VIPS can find themselves on a clear plastic dance floor levitated above everything, looking like they're hanging in air.

Masks are passed out in plenty, and capes are easy to find, while brightly colored drinks themed around super powers are plentiful. None of them actually work, but many of the Capitol people are happy to pretend, mocking super strength or invisibility with each new beverage.

Under the dance floor a catacomb of tunnels and rooms full of obstacles is splashed with black light receptive colors. Party goers are given vests and laser guns, marked green for villains and red for heros, and set loose to hunt each other in the laser tags playground. The screens in the dance floor keep a running tally of which side is winning, displaying the players on the screens around the room, along with clips from the arenas.

About half way through the night, everyone is gathered to the main stage for a special announcement.

No. No, no, no. Carlos doesn't want to talk. Not with him. As soon as Kevin looks away, as soon as Kevin goes to be unfastened, Carlos is away from that wall and doing his damnedest to disappear into the press of bodies on the dance floor. Maybe if he can cross to the other side and get off the platform, he can disappear into a -- a side room, or something, or slip out the back door. He's been here for long enough, he's made an appearance -- he can leave now, right?

Goddard help anyone who tried to stop him.

"Excuse me -- sorry, excuse me -- I'm sorry, please let me through," he mutters, winding around dancers as best he can. There's pain in his chest, and his hair is on end, and Carlos feels very, very much in danger right now. Part of the panic attack is a flight response -- he needs to get out of here.

There is no sign of Kevin as Carlos plows through the crowd - he's probably somewhere up on those lines still, trying to get himself down, right?

Or...maybe he's standing in the crowd now.

Right in front of where Carlos is running. Drink in hand.

Just...beaming.

"HI, CARLOS!"

"Aaagh!" Carlos cries in surprise, one hand going to clutch his chest through the lab coat. There is definitely a joke in here about being scared to death, but Carlos does not have the heart to make it.

"I -- h-h-hello," he gasps out, taking a reflexive step back. Carlos feels trapped -- how did Kevin get there so fast? Is there actually anywhere Carlos can run?

For the moment, he tries to breathe, just breathe, and figure out what to do next.

It's okay. Kevin wouldn't get the joke anyway.

He stood there, cape hanging around him, eyes hollow behind the mask of his costume. In carriage and expression, he was the picture of enthusiasm.

"Great party, isn't it? It's great to see you again!"

"Oh, god," muttered Carlos under his breath. He had to get out of here -- had to get away from Kevin, had to get his pulse and his breathing under control.

"I'm -- I'm sorry, but I have to go. I -- I can't stay here," he stammered, taking another step back, wishing the bumping, dancing crowd would swallow him up like a great sea serpent coiling around and then swallowing a wooden ship.

No, he didn't want to think about swallowing right now. It just reminded him that this man had literally consumed his flesh.

Blonde brows knitted together a little bit, the pointed smile dialing back just a little. For once, Kevin actually reacted to someone in plain discomfort - he just didn't interpret said discomfort correctly.

"Oh, no! Are you not feeling well? Maybe we should go sit down for a minute? Maybe water would help."

The words were well-meaning, but that likely meant little to Carlos as Kevin advanced towards him with every step back that he stumbled.

What in bunsen blazes was Kevin playing at? Facts about Pluto were playing in Carlos's head, steady and rhythmic and underscored with a desperate heartbeat. It made him panic, made him think less about what came out of his mouth.

"You killed me," he gasped out.

A blink, momentarily blocking off the voids leering - with remarkable amounts of concern, for Kevin - at Carlos. He seemed...confused, perhaps, unsure what the scientist was so upset about.

"Of course I did! That was our job in there, right? I was being professional and efficient. And you were so worried, I just had to get you out of there first!"

There was nothing slimy about his tone - he was being genuine, however fixed that grin might be.

Carlos gaped.

That -- had been a mercykill? A -- a preemptive mercykill?

In-out-in-out came his breaths as he tried to ignore the twitching in his scalp, tried not to look at Kevin's fingers, tried not to remember but to think, instead --

...it made a sort of sense, if you ignored the fact that it was an act of murder. The logic was twisted, but if Carlos twisted his point of view to match it, he could see where it lined up. Oh, god.

"--I think I do need to sit down," he said, holding a hand to the side of his head.

"Of course, friend. Come on - let's sit."

His voice was still sunny, but it was...surprisingly gentle in this moment. Kind. It was always kind, mind you, but usually to unnerving degree. This time, it matched up with what he was doing, what he was saying - it made sense. For a second, Kevin was making sense.

He didn't offer his hand, but he did offer his elbow - probably for the better, given Carlos's (completely warranted) fear of his hands.

"Let's get you feeling better, huh?"
