The Crowning of Mindy McReady

The party is brightly colored.

The theme, subtly, is super heroes. Boldly paints city scapes are splattered across the walls, and hallways are made to look like dingy, potentially crime ridden alleys. From the upper walkways of the warehouse, party goers can get hooked into harnesses and swing out over the dance floor. Above them, tributes and VIPS can find themselves on a clear plastic dance floor levitated above everything, looking like they're hanging in air.

Masks are passed out in plenty, and capes are easy to find, while brightly colored drinks themed around super powers are plentiful. None of them actually work, but many of the Capitol people are happy to pretend, mocking super strength or invisibility with each new beverage.

Under the dance floor a catacomb of tunnels and rooms full of obstacles is splashed with black light receptive colors. Party goers are given vests and laser guns, marked green for villains and red for heros, and set loose to hunt each other in the laser tags playground. The screens in the dance floor keep a running tally of which side is winning, displaying the players on the screens around the room, along with clips from the arenas.

About half way through the night, everyone is gathered to the main stage for a special announcement.

"We do be being the best team." Pruna didn't have much experience in teamwork. She rolled her eyed, "We will be talking to her, when you do no be looking like you do be wanting to be crushing her eyes."

Shooting things would probably help with that. Pruna hoped so anyways.

That actually made Sandy grin, a lopsided sort of grin.

"You really think I could crush her eyes? I had a mask and super powers last time."

The fact that Pruna thought so and was trying to make her feel better helped.

She took the girls hand and let her lead the way to the laser tag.

"Of course you could be crushing her eyes." She told her with a grin swinging their arms as they went to the lazer tag.

As Sandy foolishly imagined what that would be like (And she determined it would be gross and horrible) they were fitted for vests and given light plastic guns that shot beams of light.

"So I guess we aim for the vests." Sandy explained as they were led to the playing field. "Each shot you land gets you points, and if you get hit enough times you gotta go back to home base to recharge before your gun works again."

Seemed simple enough.

Pruna nodded, it seemed easy enough and it was a good example of a game that was also training.

"Okay, so we do be needing to be finding people to be shooting!"

Sandy nodded and let Pruna lead the way into the maze of thick walls and dark lights that made their teeth and parts of their clothes glow purple.

Bringing up her gun she spotted someone darting past a corner and she opened fire, missing their vest by half an inch. She backed up to the wall to try and stay out of sight.

Pruna found the glowing purple part really cool and grinned at Sandy's teeth in the darkness. She turned as Sandy did and drew back after the girl had missed, holding her gun ready watching the shadows for any movement.

Another figure moved and she shot at them quickly, before backing away, they shouldn't stay in the same place.

Sandy followed Pruna's grinning white teeth and a sound rang out from the gun when Pruna shot. First a sound like a laser blast then a sound like a bell. One of the counters on Pruna's gun went up.

"The one on the left is how many hits you can take before you gotta recharge. The one on the right is how many times you've shot someone and hit them."

So Pruna had the first kill.

With the clomping of someone's boots coming around the corner Sandy instinctively seized Pruna by the back of her vest and hauled her around the nearest corner to avoid being shot at.

Pruna nodded and grinned at the lights before faliling her arms a bit as Sandy grabbed her, going to attack but remembering that it was just Sandy.

She crouched by the wall, "We should be sneaking round, and getting them from behind."

Sandy nodded and this time let Pruna lead the way since stealth was really more of her specialty. The scruffy blond lurked a few steps behind and had to resist the urge to take a shot when someone darted past them but didn't notice them.

The constant thumping of techno music made her pulse race with the beat.

Pruna led the way, staying close to the wall and keeping her mouth shut so the purple of her teeth didn't show in the darkness.

She led Sandy around, looking for people who were still who they could shoot. The music didn't help, it just made it harder for her to hear anything useful.

That big lumbering rock boy came around one of the corners filling the hallway with his girth and Sandy let out a yelp startled by him and opening fire. Flashes of light and he looked disappointed before shuffling off.

"Ha!"

"You did be getting one!" She grinned and held out her fist for a fist bump.

Sandy bumped fists just in time for her vest to flash and a message to mutter mechanically that she was shot and needed to recharge.

"Aw nuts." Sandy shuffled out of the way so Pruna could get a better shot. "Guess I better get back to the base..."

Pruna wrinkled her nose and then shot back at whoever had shot Sandy. "Should I be coming with you?"

The shot connected and Pruna's score rose.

"If you want to?" Sandy hadn't thought that far ahead. "If not you can try and keep going while I go recharge and I'll try and find you as soon as I can." She offered a confident grin so Pruna wouldn't worry about her.

Pruna frowned at her thinking for a moment. "I will be coming, I will be shooting anything that do be coming near because you do be needing to be recharging."

Sandy grinned brightly feeling a rush of warmth from her protection.

"Alright, this is gonna be quick I promise."

And she was off like a bolt, staying low and close to the walls as more shadowy figures with glowing vests darted back and forth between the passages.

A glowing orb hung from the ceiling, matching the same color as their vests. A ring under it indicated where Sandy needed to stand.

Pruna followed her, shooting anything that got too near. She watched as Sandy went to stand in the ring. "So that do be recharging the gun?"

Sandy stepped into the ring and her vest lit up again, her gun as well making a pinging sound.

"I guess so I...ACK!" Some other players came around the corner and Sandy stumbled backwards opening fire on them.

Pruna jumped forward a bit so she could shoot at them and give Sandy enough time to get her balance. She hit two of them and grinned as she heard them curse and turn back towards the recharging station.

Her grin grew, "Let's be hiding here." It was the perfect place for an ambush.

Ah yes, ambush. Sandy and Pruna's favorite method of attack. Sandy's own grin shown bright in the darklit maze.

"Perfect!"

Once the girls had worked out the kinks in their tactics they would prove a force to be reckoned with in the game, even taking high scores once or twice.

So far as crowning ceremonies went, this was one of the best.

Pruna grinned and began planning in her head, looking for vantage points. She agreed this was the best crowning ceremony ever!
