The Crowning of Mindy McReady
Who| Everyone who's anyone.
What| The Crowning.
Where| A warehouse on the edge of town.
When| Starting from early evening till late into the night.
Warnings/Notes| Be sure to check the linked thread for plot purposes, even if you don't tag into it.
The party is brightly colored.
The theme, subtly, is super heroes. Boldly paints city scapes are splattered across the walls, and hallways are made to look like dingy, potentially crime ridden alleys. From the upper walkways of the warehouse, party goers can get hooked into harnesses and swing out over the dance floor. Above them, tributes and VIPS can find themselves on a clear plastic dance floor levitated above everything, looking like they're hanging in air.
Masks are passed out in plenty, and capes are easy to find, while brightly colored drinks themed around super powers are plentiful. None of them actually work, but many of the Capitol people are happy to pretend, mocking super strength or invisibility with each new beverage.
Under the dance floor a catacomb of tunnels and rooms full of obstacles is splashed with black light receptive colors. Party goers are given vests and laser guns, marked green for villains and red for heros, and set loose to hunt each other in the laser tags playground. The screens in the dance floor keep a running tally of which side is winning, displaying the players on the screens around the room, along with clips from the arenas.
About half way through the night, everyone is gathered to the main stage for a special announcement.

"At least this time you only got yourself to worry about." He reaches out a bony hand and wraps it around Wyatt's wrist.
no subject
As the boy's hand closed around his wrist, Wyatt forced himself to breath, to swallow.
To bury it all down.
What about Venus and Joel? Little Pruna... his district-mate, Susannah? He'd just spoken to her and now...
"An' there ain't as many," he murmured, trying his damnedest. "Better odds than ever."
no subject
Wyatt's been scaring him lately; not physically, because Howard isn't that afraid of being struck anymore, because he trusts Wyatt beyond the level he holds mortal men to. But in the same way, possibly because of that trust, he worries about Wyatt.
He sees the difficulty swallowing and the way Wyatt's breath stutters.
no subject
"I was lookin' forward to the break," he murmured. "To some time. ...That's all."
Some time without the arena looming over his shoulder. Some time with Max, a chance to see Howard's citizenship come through.
"But it's done, an' I'll do what I gotta."
It was small choice, to face this new twist with his head up or to be forced in swinging, but it was still a choice. (One that would, hopefully, keep them safe while he was gone.)
no subject
They mean to take Wyatt away from him.
"Think of all the presents you're going to get with both me and Max out here sending you stuff." He tries to laugh. "Come on, let's get some air?"
no subject
That, and a stiff drink.
"You two are gunna spoil me rotten," he tried to tease, shifting his wrist free of Howard's grip to reach across and rest his arm on the boy's shoulders. "Aren't ya?"
no subject
"For sure. You'll get caviar and dom periwinkle in a crystal goblet. Promise."
It's easier to joke than cry. Always has been. Joking builds the levee up and crying erodes it.
no subject
"Is that some sort of liquor?"
no subject
Howard pauses. "You know I'll take care of things here, right?"
no subject
Even pretending, he didn't have the stomach for gay music and laughter just then.
"I expect ya to get yer citizenship an' to behave yerself while I'm gone." While he was gone, as if he were confident that he would be back. "An' I'd be grateful if ya could keep an eye on Max too, an' keep him out of trouble. I expect to find ya both here, safe an' sound when I get back."
[cw: mentions of suicide]
"But I'll keep Max from killing anyone. Or if he does, I'll help him feed the body to the tiger to cover up the crime."
no subject
"There's a good lad," he replied with a small sigh. "If that don't bring me some comfort in there, nothin' will."
He paused, eyes scanning the lights in the distance, lingering on the Tower, then he added, "If ya do hear, before I get back, er if somethin' else happens, you'll send me a note? If ya can?"
no subject
"What if I get turned down?"
no subject
The body could carry on through a great many ordeals, suffer through a lot pain and shoulder a lot of weight, but the spirit... that wasn't always as willing.
"An' ya won't," he added, sounding as confident about that as he did about his return. "But if ya do, we'll try again. Or we'll make ya victor, whatever it takes to see ya out, son."
He reached out, rested a wide palm gently on the back of the boy's head.
"Hang in there, Howard."
no subject
He leans into Wyatt's hand.
"I promise I'll be here when you get back."
no subject
Giving the back of Howard's neck a small squeeze, his hand fell to rest on the boy's shoulder.
"I'll be back."
/wrap
"I'm going to hold you to that."
