The Capitol had been winding up to this for weeks. More and more extravagant decorations had begun to appear all over the city. Gruesome alleys dripping with gore, houses transformed into creaking, ancient cobweb covered dwellings, flickering ghosts haunting windows and doorways. The citizens themselves had becomes more and more extravagant as the days crept closer, dripping in glitters spiderwebs, hair teased to coil around pumpkins and crows, and decked out in meticulous costumes, often celebrating past victors, and even current tributes.

The ball at the Tribute Training Center wasn't anywhere near the only party that night, but it was the most extravagant, and the most sought after. The decorations had gone towards the classic (perhaps the goverment realizing other areas might move too close to home.) The building had been transformed into a spooky, ancient looking mansion, over taken by spiders and lit with flickering candles everywhere. The tables were spread with unimaginable heaping of treats, from grotesqueness mock organs to sparkling jewel colored sugar covered candies. Avoxs move about, for once literally ghosts, covered in their own shrouds of spider webs and sheer gauze, holding plates of smoking drinks.

Attendance for the Tributes was mandatory. As were costumes. And oh boy did their stylists go all out for this one. It was a parade and a party all rolled into ones and they weren't going to slack on that.

Pumpkin chowder, a bedeviled egg and a ghost-shaped sandwich. Its pretty good!

"A little bit, I guess." Blink. "But they're right here," pointing as he quickly pulled his face mask and bandanna off, "They're where the red marks are. People don't see them because they're covered by my bandanna most of the time."

Momoko leaned in politely to see, then turned back to her food. "You must get a lot of questions," she said and added a belated, "Thank you," taking a cautious bite of the egg. It looked normal enough, and on the whole Capitol food was very good, but sometimes there were...surprises.

Surprise, Mamoko!

...It is actually a normal deviled egg.

"I do," Don replied with a shrug. "Most of them are pretty easy to handle."
cowardfacinghappiness: Momoko looking bewildered and scared. (Um.)

Momoko was relieved, although, as always, wishing it were something sweet instead. "Is it all turtle-men where you're from?" she asked. In the face of overwhelming evidence she had accepted the existence of other worlds and the like, although to be fair she didn't really care enough to be stubborn about disbelieving it. "Ninja turtle men?" she added.

"Afraid not." He smiles. "In terms of the turtle-men, its just me and my three brothers. Ninja or otherwise."

"Hm." Momoko chewed thoughtfully. She hadn't asked much about other people's homes, much more interested in returning to her own and going by the assumption that they were all from places as freaky as they themselves were. "Where are you from?"

"New York City." Don smiles. "Manhattan Island, more specifically. Lived there in the sewers my whole life, though the only one of us who managed to get an accent is Raphael."

"America. Even the turtles are American." She was beginning to suspect a bias. Then the second half of his response sunk in and she took an automatic step backwards. Giant talking turtles with weapons and masks she could handle, but-- "Sewers?"

"Yeah. Kind of...couldn't live among humans being a mutant." After a moment, Don shook his head. "But-it wasn't so bad. We had running clean water and electricity. It was pretty comfortable."
cowardfacinghappiness: Momoko looking disbelieving. (Seriously?)

Momoko made a face, the idea of living in the sewers, eating in the sewers almost more than she could bear. "Comfortable," she repeated doubtfully. "In the sewers. But the smell."
polyturtle: (i love the world and everyone in it...)

[personal profile] polyturtle 2012-11-07 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh yeah." Don nodded. "Actually, we figured out ways to get rid of the general smell, for the most part. And also to pump sewage out of our home so it doesn't get in."
cowardfacinghappiness: Momoko looking disbelieving. (Default)

[personal profile] cowardfacinghappiness 2012-11-07 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Momoko shuddered. "Pumping sewage," she repeated, which was not a phrase she'd ever wanted to speak. "Ugh. You can't just live in a house? In the country, away from people?"

"Funny you should mention that. We actually do have a friend who lets us live at his family's house in Eastchester on occasion." Don smiles. Yeah. He fixed that house up quite a bit. "But it's not the same as living in the city, where we can help people. Plus, I think we'd all go insane if we isolated ourselves too much, like we did in the past."

And Casey's mother would start asking questions. They weren't the only ones who went to live there, after all.

"Help people do what?" asked Momoko, visions of turtle-man moving companies and the like going through her mind. It was a better line of thought than the sewers, at least.
