[voice] Network broadcast: First.

[There is a new voice on the network this evening. It might be familiar to those who follow entertainment news more religiously than most; but whether recognized or not, it is distinctive among the bright chatter of the usual programs, a voice low and deliberate and strangely solemn for an entertainment broadcaster.]

The sun sets over the not-so-distant mountains; the sun sets earlier over the not-so-distant mountains, the less distant they are. We are living shorter days than those whose horizons are empty.

[He gives the listener a moment to contemplate that; and then, low and intent:]

Good evening, Panem.

…Well. Let’s just get this out of the way-- I know what’s been on everybody’s minds this week! [There is a smile in his voice.] Yes, listeners, the Hunger Games have once again come to sweep us up in a flurry of excitement, patriotic fervor, and the combination of sharp fear and guilty relief unique to the experience of prolonged vicarious danger.

[And then, brighter:] I, for one, cannot wait to see how this Arena unfolds. I mean, a museum! Who in the Capitol doesn’t have fond memories of wandering those carpeted, marble-lined hallways – hand in hand, perhaps, with a parent, or a grandparent – struck with a distant and unnamable awe by the incomprehensible lengths of time gathered so neatly into one building? Who has not felt small beneath the skeletons of long-dead behemoths, impossible in their size, and smaller still beneath the dim conception of the millions of years that those bones waited to stand in that cavernous marble room and remind you of your insignificance in the great span of time?

[His voice, when he speaks again, is slow and fondly nostalgic.] I don’t know about you-- but this Arena sure does take me back. Good luck, Tributes! We’re rooting for you.

In other news: All reports indicate that our Tributes’ tours of their home Districts went just swimmingly! They returned – for the most part – with a new appreciation for Panem’s geographical, cultural, and culinary diversity; and, for some, perhaps a new appreciation for each other. [He lets the double meaning sit in the pause that follows, and the smile in his voice has turned into a grin.] Their praise was unfailingly glowing, exemplified in such statements as, “There’s a lot here that’s a little wonderful,” and “It is a fine party, I suppose,” and “I hate it, but at least it’s for something.” [His delivery of the quotes is brisk and cheerful, and lacks the speakers’ original inflection; he does not seem cognizant of the contradiction between the quotes and unfailingly glowing.]

[After a beat, quicker:] And now: The weather! This week in the Capitol, expect temperatures in the mid to high fifties, with light winds and partial sun. Better not put away your winter clothes just yet, though – precipitation, frozen and otherwise, is still a possibility!

But, hey—should you find your outdoor plans put on hold due to an unexpected snow shower, why not spend an afternoon browsing a tasteful, creatively marketed display of some small part of the compendium of collected human knowledge instead? That’s right, listeners—for this week only, all museums in the Capitol are offering reduced admission! A special exhibition about the history of the Hunger Games, complete with elaborate architectural miniatures of relevant Arenas, is on display at the Museum of Contemporary History now. Don’t miss it!

Well, listeners, it is time now for us all to return to our lives; to our screens; to the beginnings of our new unfolding drama, whose stakes are so much higher than any of our petty, day-to-day struggles, and whose characters are so much more interesting than the ones who populate our own lives—perhaps only because of the mortality with which we have chosen to emblazon them. Root for your favorites; and cheer all the louder when someone else’s favorite dies.

[This is delivered with a kind of contented resignation; an almost-cheerful acceptance. He could be speaking directly to you as he smiles and says:]

Good night, Panem; and may the odds be ever in your favor.

[OOC: Welcome to your new source of Capitol news! Posts like these will be going up on the network once a week to recap Capitol news, share gossip, and keep you updated on Capitol life. It'll be radio-show format, so Cecil won't be responding to any comments on it - but characters in the Capitol are free to discuss it among themselves!]
