Really, Kankri found the entire concept of this place absolutely deplorable. He would have no part of it. But until he could find some way to escape his captors, it wouldn't hurt to familiarize himself with the layout of the place. And also to find something to eat, he was quite famished at the moment.

He started in the suite of the district he'd been assigned and herded to like cattle, of course, but soon enough he was meandering all through the building, taking note of its occupants and features with various degrees of disapproval. He wasn't entirely sure of how to approach anyone yet, but he supposed it wouldn't hurt to try for the sake of information.

"Well- I can't speak for what he's like here," Kankri mumbles, shamefaced. Ugh, things he doesn't even wanna think about right now. "It's very complicated. Are you sure it's him taking them? Your, ah, yogurts, I mean."

"Eighty percent sure. Actually sixty percent sure. Honestly I don't know, but someone here can't read that I've put stickers with my name and logo all over them." She scooches in her seat, swinging her legs over the armrest and relaxing there.

"Oh, that's right. I'll probably have to learn to read again, won't I?" He sighs glumly. "But it could also be someone inconsiderate enough to take other people's food in the first place, regardless of literacy."

"That's why I put a logo on it, too. Maybe I should just lick everything before I put it in the fridge." She pouts. "You can't read?"

"I can read quite well in my language. But even if we can comprehend each other's speech I doubt we use the same written language," Kankri replies. "And if the symbols I've seen on various things are your written language, then yes, I'm afraid I can't read them at the moment."

"Ah, yeah, the ABC's. Well, you can always write your language with the other trolls, right? What language is it, anyway?"

Kankri hesitates a moment, then reluctantly replies, "While I and the other trolls share a species, we are actually from, ah, entirely different cultures. I'm not entirely sure that they would use Beforan or a variation on it."

"Huh, and yours is Beforan, because you're from Beforus?" Venus shrugs her lips and nods. "I guess that's easy enough to remember. Say, you have any skill with weapons?"

She doesn't seem to notice how quickly she's changed subjects.

"Precisely," Kankri starts to say, but then the topic changes so fast it leaves him more than a little bewildered.

"No," he replies after a moment of processing the question. "Beforus is- was, very strictly a peaceful culture, and due to my mutation I was raised in a very sheltered fashion. Even if that weren't the case, I'm quite strictly opposed to hurting others. I have no intention of killing anyone in this game our hosts have concocted."

"Well, not to disrespect your culture or anything, but you're going to want self-defense. And honestly, if you know how to disarm your opponent without getting lethal, you're less likely to get killed or kill them than if you go in not knowing anything." She raises her eyebrows. "Trust me, I'm a professional."

Kankri hesitates. "No, that does make sense," he murmurs after a moment. "I suppose that if I'm stranded in this sort of situation, it would be better to learn something like that. I'm just, as I said, quite inexperienced, so I don't even have a basis to begin from. I doubt I'll be able to do much for some time."

He sounds pretty glum. He is pretty glum, everything about this is awful.

"I'll meet you downstairs later today, if you want. She checks the clock on the wall, a garish piece of 'modern art' that looks to her like a coffee stain. "I work out at like, four p.m. I can teach you basic ways to disarm someone with a knife, since that's the most common weapon you see."
