Who: Orc and you
What: Drinking to forget and failing
Where: The Bar in the Training Center (With special bonus thread set in his room later)
When: During the finale of the Arena
Warnings: Well he's a suicidal, depressed, short tempered drunk 15 year old boy trapped in a rock monster's body. I'm sure something will come up.
The bartenders and serving staff had gotten used to Orc over time. They knew if they kept the booze flowing and put him in a dark corner somewhere he would keep quiet...mostly. And the other customers wouldn't be as bothered by any rude sounds he made or if he was disgustingly slopping drink on himself or mashing food into his maw like a pig.
Orc had gotten used to the bartenders and serving staff. He knew that if he kept quiet and didn't shout they would keep bringing him drinks and not tell his handlers to get him out of the bar.
It was a semi-functional relationship that allowed Orc to try and numb every last feeling he had with alcohol and food.
That part was not as functional.
Part of the problem was there was a TV facing him. Normally the staff was smart enough to change the channel but today they had forgotten and he was watching the coverage of the games, complete with some of their top 10 kills so far.
His death at the point of Ellie's spear was number five.
Then there was the hot topic of who was dating who, some woman in a suit that looked like it was made from those fancy Christmas flowers...whatever they were called, was commenting on the possibility of Orc and...Eponine?!
"What the hell does Porcupine mean?" He muttered as the word was pasted under a picture of the two of them drinking together in the arena.

Re: Back in his Bedroom the night
"She's just mad at me, man. She'll say anything. She'll believe anything."

"You two seemed happy together." He pointed out and his shoulders slumped. This discussion was equal parts confusing and depressing.
no subject
"Well, yeah. She's nice. She's cute. She's a bit of a nut, though, so don't listen to her when she talks about me. She's biased."
no subject
But...well...
"She didn't seem nuts when I talked to her. On TV yes but..." He didn't know how to explain it.
"I mean not as bad as back home. They were really crazy." They being the handful of insane kids they'd had to deal with. Pick any random one.

It's an honest question, a scared one. Howard feels frayed, and he doesn't know how many more Arenas he can take.
no subject
"Back home it was all horror all the time."
no subject
As grateful as he is to the Capitol, the Arenas are easier on him. There the enemies are real and not just figments of his traumatized imagination.
"The breaks almost make it worse."
no subject
"Well, what do you want to do then?" He offered trying to imagine some kind of future for them to work towards.
no subject
He trails off and shrugs.

Those two words had been uttered many times in the years that Howard and Orc had known each other. It meant Howard had something to say and was too afraid to say it. Even Orc knew that.
Most the time it was because Howard knew whatever he was going to say would upset Orc. And Orc didn't like being upset so he almost always let it slide. Not tonight. Maybe never again.
Things were different now.
"You just what?" He challenged.

He tries to relax his body as much as his voice, as if none of this matters. As if it's idle talk.

"Did you know Dekka was a dyke?" He started, unaware that he was probably the last person from their world who didn't know that the strong black girl who had played such an important role in the FAYZ preferred girls.

Understatement of the year.
"Dad used to say Dyke's were uppity bitches who needed to be put in their place. That they just wished they had guy parts." And those were some of the tamer things Mr. Merriman had said on the subject.
"But Dekka...she always worked really hard and never treated anyone wrong. She wasn't a bitch. She was a good person." They had only spent a short time together but Orc respected Dekka.
"Dad was wrong." He finished "He just didn't know it."

He really wants to believe it, and he knows that honestly Orc is too stupid to make an elaborate lie of this, so he stays where he is, feeling Orc's vocal cords vibrating under the skin under Howard's ear.
"Your dad was kind of a tool, dude."
no subject
"Yeah...I know."
And that was the first time he had every acknowledged that the man who he had grown up idolizing...was just that. A man. A petty foolish man who said things that were just his opinion and not right.
Orc had been forced to grow up alot in the last year and this was just one more realization brought on by all of this.
"His head would probably explode if he met Max and Wyatt." He added, because even Orc wasn't so oblivious that he was unaware of the two manly men and their special relationship.

Howard had never liked Orc's dad, even before he knew the extent of the abuse. Orc's dad had usually been drunk when Howard came over, and more often than not had some less-than-open-minded opinion about his son cavorting with a black kid. Mr. Merriment had been the impetus behind quite a few sleepovers at Howard's house.
Howard had always been pretty careful to keep a lid on complaining about Orc's dad.
"Bet we'd outlive your dad at the Games."
no subject
"He'd kick both out asses if he could catch us." And where Howard was fast Orc was not. Where Orc was durable Howard was not.
In Orc's mind his dad was both.

"Yeah, you're right. His ass would would be grass."
He had no joy in that revelation though. After all his dad was a jerk...but he was still his dad.

"Can I stay here tonight?"
no subject
A pause.
"We're not gonna get in trouble for that are we?"
Because he'd never known anyone from another district to spend the night before.

"You mean you guys actually...like...sex?" He managed to spit out suddenly feeling much younger then he was.
