People In Glass Houses...

Who | Timaeus Nadir and guests
What | Timaeus is hosting a picnic get-together/catch-up.
Where | The picnic will be taking place in the Tropical Habitat Dome.
When| We'll be using a bit of wibbly time so that people who want to attend can.
Warnings/Notes| None as of yet.

(This is an opportunity for me to make some new CR as well as catch up with ongoing relationships, but I also want to encourage tagging around between characters! Feel free to do whatever you like in the setting with whoever you like! Also I will be backtagging this so don't feel you've missed the boat if you haven't tagged in immediately <3)

Timaeus certainly knew how to organise a gathering- even if it wasn't an outrageously opulent celebration to be held on one of his own yachts. This one was to be held under the expansive dome of the Tropical Habitat- the entire location rented out for the day to Timaeus and his guests, a loosely private affair- formal invitations as such hadn't been extended, but those welcome knew they were. Naturally, all tributes and victors were included in this group.

The Dome was a beautiful piece of architecture in itself, though antiquated when compared with the technology used for the Arenas. Rather than invisible forcefields, the climate of the interior was separated from the outside by elaborately curving steel and glass. Inside, tropical plants of all types thrived- there was a still, green pond and, deeper inside, a cascading waterfall. Butterflies in hundreds of colours, sizes and shapes flitted about, tropical birds swooped between the trees, brightly coloured fish darted in the water.
Blankets and cushions had been scattered in the main clearing with hampers of food, but there was plenty of space for the guests to break away from the gathering if they so desired- the dome was full of winding paths through the greenery- some even climbing around the trunks of the largest trees and leading to viewing platforms above. In a temporary gazebo in the clearing, a string quartet played music that wasn't quite the classical pieces Tributes were familiar with.

Timaeus himself seemed in a brighter mood than he had been for months, more than happy to make conversation with anyone who approached him- though he was certainly keeping an eye open for particular individuals. Some that he'd met, some that he'd lost and had returned to him, and others still that he had yet to meet.

It was a terrible joke, but watching Ellie laugh, Wyatt couldn't stop the wide grin that spread across his face. The smile reaching high enough to touch his eyes, wrinkling the blue gaze around the corners.

"That one's older than I am," he laughed, rumbling happily. "Ain't like bad jokes are a new invention."

"I fucking love terrible jokes," Ellie said with a grin. "I found this book of them, back home, tons of really awful puns. I used to bug Joel with them."

She paused, thoughtful, and then arched an eyebrow. "I wonder if they have them, here..."

"I wouldn't doubt it," Wyatt replied, catching the tip of his tongue between his teeth, wrestling with the grin that threatened to consume his face. "So long as folk's have been tellin' jokes, there's been bad ones."

"I think I can still remember a few. You want to hear one?" She asked, but before he could actually reply in the affirmative or the negative she was already clearing her throat to tell it.

"Okay, okay. So. I tried to catch some fog earlier..." She paused for dramatic effect, and raised her hands in an exaggerated shrug.

"I mist."

It started with a snort, a low, rough sound, low in his throat, then it moved up into his shoulders, his head dipping, face hidden beneath the brim of his hat as the laugh shook through him.

"Well, I can see how ya'd find that one in the book," he shook his head.

Ellie started to laugh as he did, and in a moment she was wiping tears from her eyes.

"God, that book was so good. Best thing about the apocalypse, hands down." Well maybe not the best, but pretty close.

"Always a silver linin', huh?" Wyatt grinned, rising an eyebrow. "I see one 'round, I'll be sure an' let ya know."

Not quite an apocalypse here, but close enough that a few jokes wouldn't be remiss.

"Life goes on. Endure and Survive," she adds in a somewhat grandiose voice.

"Comic books too. Though the worst thing about comic books was that they always fucking ended on a cliff hanger. Do you know how hard it is to find comic books in order during an apocalypse? No? Well it's hard."

She paused, then frowned.

"Wait, would you even know what a comic book is?"

He slanted her a look, mouth twisting in bemusement.

"Some kind'a book?" he offered, a laugh barely restrained. "Sorry, Sis."

"Oh man," She says, her face falling in very real pity. "Oh man, I need to get you some comic books. They're like books but with pictures everywhere instead of just text. They are awesome. I liked the sci fi ones, best. Aliens, other worlds--"

She paused, suddenly realising what she was saying.

She'd been killed by an alien, just a few days ago.

"... Not like this, though. This is, uh, something else."

He'd arched an eyebrow, mind going the same place hers did at the mention of aliens and other worlds. Recalling lithe black bodies and the burning blood that had taken Max's leg, the high-pitched screams that rolled off the damp tunnel walls. The Capitol, the same world they said, but so far gone from anything he'd ever known....

He didn't really need a book to see things like she described.

But then it softened, settling back where it belonged as his head tipped.

"Somethin' else," he echoed. "That's one way'a puttin' it."

"... Yeah. Sorry," She added a little sheepishly, feeling bad for having dragged the mood down.

"Anyway, I'll uh, let you enjoy the rest of the party. I'm going to go see if I can find Howard or whatever."

"Stay outta trouble," he told her, smiling softly. Distantly. "An' be sure to say hello to Mr. Nadir when ya get a chance, could save yer life."

And every little bit counted.

She gave him a very clumsy salute. "Will do. You too, Wyatt. See you around!"

And then, just like that, she turned and disappeared into the crowd.
