That didn't look remotely close to a smile. R frowned, leaned forward to get a better look at Peeta and this close he could see the classic signs of Living distress - flared nostrils, jaw razor-wire tight, the human's eyes dilated and blown out. Peeta's smile was wan, barely there. It flickered at the roar underneath them, cracked a little bit more at the edges.
"Let's...lurk. Not...here, okay?" R was already reaching out toward Peeta, his head hanging to one side. Peeta seemed like he was holding it together, but only barely. What he needed was a nice, quiet corner to lurk in, get his thoughts in order, and R was relieved to say he knew plenty of spots he could suggest.
