Even Marius could tell that he had hit some nerve. For a moment the gaze he received in return for his apparently offensive statement made him want to stand back, simply leave, a feeling that was augmented by the sudden hyper-awareness of the stares he was getting at this public spectacle he was one of the main participants of.

But he tightened the curl of his fists and told himself that he had nothing to fear, nothing to lose anymore. "The only payment worth our blood and sacrifice is freedom itself."

A bit hypocritical, perhaps, coming from someone who wanted to die because of a lady, but it was not something he had noted about himself just yet.
