"So you're operating under a sort of nihilist, heidonistic egoism." It's unsurprising and Albert's almost disappointed. He's not sure why he expected more from Tom or even if he wanted it. He can't quite fault Tom for wanting to settle back with someone he loves in relative comfort, he supposes. The difference is Tom doesn't care what happens to anyone else on the way.
