It appears as though he's doing well. The Batter doesn't always look for recognition or praise - it's unnecessary, it doesn't grant him instant victory, it's useless to him. But knowing that his authorities see him as an asset, as someone who will bring honour and victory to their district, he can't help feeling a little smug about it.
