Who| Merlyn and OPEN
What| A new arrival stalks around the place and grumps at people
Where| Training Center
When| A few days after the Crowning
Warnings/Notes| Aggressive snark?

"Archimedes! Archimedes! Drat it all, where is that bird?"

The voice had the resonance of age, but none of the weakness. It was audible through the halls of the Training Center long before its owner came into view. Even in the ridiculous pyjamas his new hosts seemed to have given him, Merlyn cut a striking figure, if a rather scruffy one; he strode through the place with an air of righteous indignation, flyaway white hair streaming behind him and eyes glittering with purpose.

They were, of course, entirely out of line to have brought him here. That, Merlyn had no question of, and he fully intended to bring it up with his... hosts? Captors? Whoever they might be, he intended to talk to them just as soon as possible. But other tasks currently took priority. Tasks such as finding his friend, and changing back into some clothes that fitted him better. They had taken his hat, for goodness' sake! What kind of civilised person took a man's hat? His head felt naked without it, his bald spot prominently on display. How was a man supposed to get any respect when he looked as if he'd just lost his way back from hospital? It was really very rude. Then again, what could one possibly expect from the kind of barbarians who considered any part of this to be in line with reason and civilisation?

Yes, he would certainly have a great deal to say to them later on. For now, though, he stalked through the unfamiliar corridors as if he owned them, glaring at the architecture as if the light fittings had personally insulted him. His priority, he had decided, had to be finding out whether Archimedes had managed to keep up with him in the journey here, and perhaps - while he was at it - just where "here" was.

It was in the pursuit of that second goal that, when he saw someone nearby, he strode over to them, a bony figure with a straight back, a very long beard, and frankly impressive eyebrows. He had the look to him of the schoolmaster, the professor, someone to be trusted and looked up to. Someone who could be relied upon to help the world make sense, if only somebody would have the common courtesy to give him the pieces to its puzzle.

"Sedemihcra ot srewsna, rethgilb yrenro. Lwo na nees uoy evah? Ereh regnarts a m'I."

It was very rude of them, he considered, not to have answered him already.

"So," He starts carefully, absorbing everything he's been told with careful consideration. "Everyone where you come from is literally a.. I'm gonna say time traveler? Do you willingly travel through time or does it just happen spontaneously?" He desperately doesn't want to sound dense, but his curiousity is forcing him to seek more and more elaboration.

"Okay, so you exclusively live your life backward for no particular reason other than that's just how it happens for you. In particular." He really doesn't sound like he gets it, but when Merlyn asks if he understands? Well. "Yep. Got it. Like I said, I'm a time traveler myself, this stuff is like.." He circles his hands while searching for a word. "Basic math, you know? Two plus two equals five- no. Four. Whoops. Anyway. Welcome to Panem."

Dave could get defensive, but he doesn't. He knows he goofed that one, he also knows he's smart. Probably. Not smart like book smart, or street smart or.. Okay he's smart in some manner. He knows that. So he shrugs it off.

"What can you do, man? Earth blows up when you're thirteen, destroying the many, many spelling bee trophies and letters from the President and then here I am at sixteen playing Stab Or Get Stabbed for a living." He lifts his hands and spreads them to express his complete, forced apathy at this. "You're welcome for the welcome- and you don't have to call me dear boy. Dave works, Dave works really well. Not Dear Dave either, makes it sound like you're writing to me for advice. My advice is no."

The chance in tone is a little startling, if only because Dave isn't entirely used to having people take him seriously. It's not like he's lying, but it happened so long ago it's easy to be flippant about it.

He seems to visibly clam up a little in response to the sympathy, eyes looking elsewhere but barely visible through his sunglasses. "Hey, no problem. Happens to the best of us, bigger problems presently." He inclines his head as a very vague indication that being here is the biggest problem. "So, you any good at fighting?"

"I'm sure we all do." Says the kid who was raised and trained to fight through a lifetime of bullshit, but there's always playstation games to be played. "You don't really get a choice though, that's the nature of being here. Are you sure you can't defend yourself at all? Do you know a little karate?"

"Right, my mistake. You can choose to die. They aren't really big on stopping that." He doesn't mean to sound terse, it's just honesty. Honesty and slight frustration, just not necessarily at Merlyn. "Kill or be killed is pretty much the name of the game, which is probably why I keep losing." He strokes his chin contemplatively before he drops his hand to his side. "If you need someone to have your back, I'll probably be around."

"I am not certain if they are a parody of anything," Iskierka answers with something at least passingly familiar to a shrug - it's mostly in her wings, but it's... reasonably understandable as a shrug all the same.

"But they are where we are made to fight, yes."

"Trust me, I've taken plenty of harm. It's not that bad, you get used to it." Ugh, he sounds so defeated. Nasty, stop that brain. "Look, the good thing is that you don't die permanently. You just keep coming back until you don't. They don't usually say why you don't come back, but it's pretty obvious that it usually happens to people who aren't interesting enough. It's the entertainment business, you know? They like crowd pleasers."

"I do not see any problem with it," Iskierka answers. "After if we didn't not fight our enemies would surely take over and it would be ever so inconvenient. Besides, there are hardly any prizes to be won in being conquered."

Not to mention she's much too invested in not letting Napoleon and his allies winning, even despite not being entirely clear on what they're fighting for, apart from 'making sure the other guy doesn't win.'

There's something about Merlyn's expression that clues Dave into the fact that he's about to ask about things he can't explain, so he isn't too surprised by the question.

"Yeah." He elaborates helpfully. "In our body. We never age, we stay basically the same as we were when they bring us in." He thins his eyes just a little at the question, but he doesn't question it. "Science. It's all science. This is Sci-Fi at best, not Fantasy."

"Whyever should I not be?" Iskierka answers, without sounding even the slightest bit offended. True enough, she doesn't know anything about the kind of dragons that Merlyn is used to speaking to, but many of the dragons she knows have at least vaguely similar thoughts.

Well, similar if you exclude Temeraire, but Iskierka's already doing that, at least for this conversation.

"And I suppose there might be a library," she adds as a sort of afterthought. "But I cannot say where it would be if there is one."

"They're pretty advanced here. Kind of impressive given that it seems like everyone is just a normal human, normally shit like this is the fault of alien meddling." He shrugs. "He probably has something in common with minds behind it, but I wouldn't know. Is there anything else I can answer for you? If not, I'll let you gather your bearings and your beardings. You'll probably need some time to mull it over."
