Not this long, lingering pseudo-death, the sort of thing that left them still a someone, a half-resolved issue. The conditioning process isn't something one easily recovers from, but it isn't foolproof, not like the puncture of a bullet or the slice of a blade in the right place. There is, he thinks, always that maybe. That pesky possibility that something might go wrong, that these offenses to the state might go on to wreak further offenses, however mild. There are so many maybes in his line of work, so many uncontrollable variables, and he hates to leave more loose ends than necessary.

(And to think that he might encounter those men he tortured again, staring back at him like a revisited nightmare, as though he hadn't solved anything at all--)

"Yeah, I'm sure we can find something a bit nicer to talk about."
