He chuckles quietly, which more or less equates to something that sounds like an amused cough.

His voice is so gravelly that it sounds more or less as if he has lived his whole life on a steady diet of nothing but whiskey and cigarettes, but he manages to give it a relatively pleasant tone all the same. Not pleasing to the ear, perhaps, but definitely friendly.
