Gary laughs back and keeps going. Their mutual amusement feeds him, energizing him tenfold over what he would have had if they kept this to a stern lesson, and it shows in how must faster his strikes come and how little fear he has in putting some strength behind them. Granted, it's probably becoming obvious that Gary isn't actually trying to strike at Éowyn herself--instead he's aiming at her sword, apparently in anticipation of the inevitable parry. Or because this is fun and he wants to keep it going longer. Either excuse is equally applicable.
Even when she sobers, Gary remains bright and suitably entertained. "Oh, yeah, I get it!" he says, perhaps a little too happily for the subject they're discussing. The whiplash is too much for him to accept right now when he's in such a good mood. "I've been in, like, three of these Arena things now. They're cool, but they kinda suck balls sometimes? Like, I got straight-up stabbed to death in the last one, that wasn't a lot of fun."
